I really am sick and tired of the whole gambling culture these daysIt's everywhere and it's terribleIt is not normal and we really should stand up against itYou can earn money with gambling but only if you OWN the casino

@stux Sports gambling and the way it is promoted are terrible. Big Tech is all in on this garbage. Worst of all are state-sponsored lotteries and games, which prey on the people least able to afford the losses and who are most likely not to fully understand the odds involved.

@stux Curiously, Richard Feynman's biography describes meeting a character known as Nick the Greek, who made money at casinos not be owning one, but by making side bets. He only bet when the odds were in his favor. Sometimes people would bet against him when they knew the odds because Nick the Greek had a reputation, and after going home, someone could brag about betting with him, or better yet, beating him.https://wiki.phantis.com/index.php/Nick_the_Greek

@stux It really depends on what you play. This is true - over a statistically significant sample - for games played against the House. It is not true for games facilitated by the House such as poker where the edge is not found in the manipulation of odds compared to probability but in skill and study. It is partially true in games like Blackjack and even forms of Baccarat where skilled players can out-compete the House but their prevalence is sufficiently small to be worth the risk to the House.

@stux really seems like this has ebbed and flowed throughout all of human history. that being said, i might argue it's worse today with the ability for massive outreach from modern technologies

@stux My grandfather was a problem gambler. It impoverished my father and grandmother. The predatory gambling industry is a cancer on society.

@stux 100% agree. Gambling is highly addictive to some people and can ruin their lives. That's why it used to be mostly against the law. But in the US, the culture is so degraded and tilted toward allowing the investor class to extract maximum dollars from the average American citizen that it's being allowed to proliferate.#Gambling

@stux Caveat: you can earn money gambling if you stick only to games like poker where you're playing against the other players _and_ you understand the game and the odds and have the stainless-steel nerves it takes to follow the odds no matter how attractive the current opportunity looks. Oh, and you know how to read other people really really well.

@stux My friend worked in the control room of a large casino here in Vancouver and she said they got to decide who the winners are, if any. The bigger problem are the online casinos with apps, every commercial break on TV churning out ads for them, it’s very annoying. The government says 3.3% of people who gamble develop serious addiction issues, doesn’t seem that much but 3.3% too many.
