Context:"tell it to the bees" is an old folk notion. The idea is that if big things happen in your life, like a child being born, an election, someone moving, marriage, a new job etc. you should go out to the bee hives and whisper the news to them. The bees like to keep up with current events of the creatures they live with and it's bad luck and a bad idea to leave them out. Ants, are in everyone's business so they do not need to be told about news.

"Tell it to the bees" works both ways. You should also inform all of the humans you know about important news from the hive (and the ant hill.)

A little ant walks up to you and says "You are getting a divorce" they figured it out before you did.

@futurebird when grandpa died, grandma went out to his beehives and told the bees. The way I understand the practice is that bees become accustomed to one keeper and humans tell the bees about the disruption in service in hopes the bees will stay and keep working for the next beekeeper.

@futurebird I'll start telling the bees stuff when they start telling me.I have a whole bunch of bumblebees in particular and they haven't once told me anything more than just a hello. And I'm not even going to repeat what the wasps say.

@futurebird The climax of the Terry Pratchett book "Lords and Ladies" is built around that folktale. Granny Weatherwax frequently asks the bees what's going on.

@futurebird You go home and tell this incredible story to your partner. They laugh. They always laugh. "Why can't you just believe me for once!?"Six months later, you file the papers yourself. The ants carry on, unaware as a whole of any aspect of your life, save for one. He looks up, ceases his labor and steps out into the open to stare at the sky. And then, his unique part of the Great Ant Prophecy of All Things having come to pass, his spirit leaves him.His body will not be wasted.
