⚠️ Do not be HACKED !! 😱Software updates include not only new features but also critical security fixes. To keep your site secure and stable, ensure you always use the latest version. We frequently observe numerous sites across the Fediverse running very outdated versions of Mastodon or Misskey. Some sites are even using versions over a year old.Be the smart administrator and keep your site up to date.#Mastodon #Misskey #Fediverse #ActivityPub #PixelFed #PeerTube #InfoSec #Security

@fox That is insane!Mastodon released a special release of 4.2, called 4.2.27 only 3 weeks ago, because of how flawed it was, and even they note in their release logs that this release cannot address everything (see URL). They have been trying to offer extended support for these people who still have not updated, but that only takes away time and resources from the development. Eventually, they are just come out with a release that will not work with all these absolute copies (it would be the smart thing to do).https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.27

@Tempest @fox Updating Mastodon isn't hard anyway. We usually update on day0 when a new release drops. We do automated file-system snapshots (copy-on-write) of the servers datasets in 20 minute intervals via sanoid. As user mastodon:$ git stash$ git fetch$ git checkout v4.5.0-rc.2$ git stash pop $ bundle install$ yarn install --immutable$ RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails assets:precompile$ RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails db:migrateAs user root (in the individual jails):# service $service restartThe last updates 4.4 -> 4.5 did take less than 10 minutes (and that with a pretty large Postgres database already)

@Larvitz @Tempest if i add the smallest of modifcations that doesnt work anymore, honestly im thinking of just reinstall mastodon for every update since the way i installed it pretty much plug and play with the proper env file

@fox @Tempest idk. Our Mastodon codebase has quite a lot of modifications:- Additional themes- Code-Modifications for polls, post length, profile fields, SMTP handling , YT-Embed handling etc.- Custom code to fetch additional replies from not federated instances- Custom design modificationsMostly "git stash pop" merges these with the new tag. And sometimes, I haver merge-conflicts, that I manually solve. So far, that approach worked wonderfully for the last ~4 years for me.YMMV.

@fox From what I gather, the Fediverse — which includes popular platforms like Mastodon and Misskey — is experiencing the same pattern that community forums once did. Most sites simply run the vanilla software without any modifications, and many remain outdated because their administrators don’t know how to update them.As with community forums, many people on the Fediverse like the idea of running their own community website — but that doesn’t mean everyone should. Not all administrators have the technical skills, time, or commitment needed to properly maintain a dynamic, functioning community that users can rely on.@Larvitz #Fediverse #Community #Forums

@Larvitz @Tempest git stash didnt work properly for me since in the end only the version number changed. I tried making a my own fork of mastodon but due to a lack of knowlege on how to use git that didnt work too so i just update when i need to.

@Tempest @Larvitz my modifications allow my instance to have one of the highest carecter limits out of all activitypub instances and since i can easely selfhost activitypub software i should settle for no less. Also like mastodon should make such stuff config options since it doesnt even force a 500 carecter limit on external posts.
