Content feudalism. Saw a clip of a guy who was making fun of "AI slop soul music" -- but, because the AI song was played on the Joe Rogan show, he would only play very short clips: he didn't want to get a content strike from youTube. These people have put the music I grew up with in church in a blender, performed necromancy, puppeted the dead and that's fine... but if a person who *isn't* powerful uses more than three seconds of "their intellectual property" that person will be punished.

@futurebird I have a podcast that I produced for 13 years (millions of hits...see https://www.garymcgraw.com/technology/silver-bullet-podcast/). We licensed our theme song from the band who wrote it. When we once produced a video version (I think it was Richard clarke) we got a take down and had to jump through many hoops to get the episode posted.

@futurebird Hang on. Wasn't there a judicial decision somewhere in the US that denied the copyright to AI-generated stuff? I seem to remember reading something of the sort, maybe on Doctorow's blog...So he would be able to use the thing at will. Unless he was using a videoclip of the show, maybe?

@futurebird AI product fails the Berne Convention's test for what is copyrightable, so any jurisdiction which gives it copyright protection is granting a whole new legal right to AI companies to the detriment of actual copyright holders.YouTube OTOH is highly arbitrary about its use of copyright law, instead relying on the old "might makes right" doctrine of "so what can you do about it, huh?"

@futurebird The law protects but does not bind Joe Rogan and his ilk, everybody else gets a copyright strike for using public domain NASA footage 😔

@futurebird this is for Art and Cod.Today we are talking about the history of internet art. For part of it I contrast Zines and the early web with *looks around* whatever this is.

@futurebird sampling has had a long artistic history, and copyright maximalist corporations have done their damndest to extract as much rent as possible from artists. And this is why intellectual property laws need to be weakened, not strengthened.
