       @futurebird one question is why do we *all* grind so hard for the likes? We are all attention serfs, driving revenue for the new media land owners. Which is why the fedi matters.I like thinking about this and think your framing is 💯 OTOH, it’s very probably the birthday of some double amputee vet, given how many vets we have.        @futurebird I never want to be the person *defending* Musk (he had my contempt starting with PayPal — I hated him before it was trendy) but I do think he suffers from an inability to empathize or relate to other humans. I suspect he is masking.I am not an MD but it seems like he has a legitimate condition that might explain why he is attention seeking. I hold some compassion for whatever these struggles are. I don’t think he is just a sociopath.

       @futurebird I was brought up by a single mom, comp sci graduate from a state school, and a community college before that. She got a job developing a new gaming console in 1982 at Milton Bradley. She brought me to work when she had to pull all nighters.I have a vivid memory of the break room -- cardboard ashtrays and vending machines, including the worst coffee to have ever experienced. I love these spaces.

       @futurebird It’s “the algorithm” slowly triangulating on the flaws of our limbic system. It’s peak capitalism, where billion dollar companies outsource content creation to free labor, and promote that which engages to keep people glued to their advertising platform. It’s the culmination of the best engineering minds of our generation toiling for decades to convert dopamine into money.

       @futurebird what about a binary search experiment?Students know that under each dot there is a number. Numbers are in order.Students are ask to find a specific number. They do not know if the number is on the paper.They do not know the minimum or maximum value of the numbers. How few items can they scratch off to find the number or find the missing number? What strategy did they use?You could explore the problem with different number distributions.

       @futurebird Aren’t we all nostalgic for random crap? This photo means nothing to me, but I could post one of my own that would be meaningless to everyone else, but give me big vibes.  I myself am ambiguously nostalgic. But I can’t honestly say I think someone stole the past from me. Like what even is this? Is this a common source of anger, or just an outlier?

       @futurebird I enjoyed reading “Transfiguration of the Commonplace” (ISBN 9780674903463) as an undergrad. It is a fun exploration of the ontological meaning of (art) objects. It was an important book for me.You might like it!
