@darnell For what it's worth: here is my argument with respect to including Threads in Fediverse numbers: we should only include the number of Threads users who have turned on ActivityPub integration (seems to be something like 50k, https://fediversereport.com/why-is-meta-adding-fediverse-interoperability-to-threads/ , which is incidentally about the same number of Fediverse users who have bridge dtheir accounts to atproto/atmopshere/bluesky via bridgy). Because: let's think about Google accounts. Some of them have direct access to "the SMTP network" via gmail. We should count those as email users. But there are also lots of Google accounts that do *not* have associated gmail address. Those have no connection to "the SMTP network", and we should not count them as "email users", at least not as "google email users". Same thing with Threads users and ActivityPub.

@ricci Yeah, I agree. I know of the 145 million Flipboard users, about 1200 (I think‽) have turned on Fediverse sharing, & those stats are thankfully included by @fediverseobserver (which makes it easier to measure).Threads being around 50,000 makes sense, as I doubt Meta would mention any stats under a million to the press (I wish they did for what it is worth).

@verita84 Friendly reminder:until 2030/2031, the growth of the decentralized network looks promising, but beyond that date, I don't know anything else...It doesn't matter if BS grows quickly at this time; the important thing is not to grow, but to show that it can be maintained over time organically without algorithms or strange methods, only with human integration...

@verita84 @Ota1504 - Oddly enough, I think people being able to say slurs and shitpost creates a better environment online. Let people be open about who they are instead of forcing them underground to fester in resentment. Eventually that's gonna come back and bite the censors in the ass like it always does. And that includes up to retaliatory violence, which always spirals out of control. Most people want The One Ring (absolute authority to dominate their 'enemies'), few want to throw it into the Crack of Doom.

@David @verita84 I don't think so... although the article mentioned falls short because it only sees a small echo of growth, it won't be the only peak of expansion (maybe fedi will be more in the future?), anyway, the point is that it's clear the idea of the decentralized internet is the way forward in this era

It's true that we're fighting to expose what's wrong, but part of the change coming in the future (within a few years) is to demonstrate humanity, values, and cultural development.
