@mansr It's also English. This might be a case of pillaging so many words that we didn't notice we stole the same one twice?

@futurebird As used in English, galleria has only a small subset of the meanings of gallery, possibly because it is a much more recent arrival.

@futurebird well, the usually offered etymology is that they come from the same Italian word ... : ) A doublet, as the linguists say ... ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doublet_(linguistics) )But "galleria" usually refers to a covered area with shops, while "gallery" usually refers to some place art is exhibited, whether for sale or for public appreciation.

@futurebird Gallery: a place where art is shown. Galleria: a failing mall built in the '60s or '70s, shambling along because people still go to that one place with the turkey curry in the remains of the food court, across from where the Radio Shack was.

@isocat When people talk about all the churches that have closed I think about the radio shacks that are no longer with us. Tis the time to build the hacker space. We all need a place to worship. To nourish the soul.

@futurebird Oh, and the plural thing can be resolved satisfactorily, too. One gallery, several galerim; one galleria, several galleriae.

@futurebird afaik all uses of the word as a mall refer to the one in Milano, Italy. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II right next to the Duomo cathedral, built in late 19th C. But I just found out that both words came (possibly) from Galilee.

@futurebird😃Interesting juxtaposition of church and radio shack. I used to love standing amongst the potentiometers and transistors and soldering irons and feeling a sense of POTENTIAL.@isocat @paninid
