I just saw an ad for "AI Fax Automation" and this is exactly what I mean when I say that AI is not the future, it's the worst of the present perpetuated forever

@ricci What's wrong with using a newer technology to handle an older technology that is still here?

@mschfr because instead of making actually new, better things, we're just going to drag forward the worst systems that we have - this is the actual bet that AI companies are making

@regehr @mschfr it was in a medical context, where I can absolutely believe that faxes are still used to transmit critical information, but it's like instead of figuring out a better workflow and moving to that let's use AI to fax the physician's notes or create a cover sheet or some shit, probably

@regehr @mschfr Yep, this is exactly what it is. From their website:> Eliminate your fax backlog and unlock better outcomes> Spending repetitive hours manually processing and routing faxes is unsustainable for staff, and the backlog translates to delayed care for patients. Fax Transform eliminates the backlog for referrals, prescription refill requests, DME requests, and any other fax type.> 1. Fax is received and classified> 2.Fax Transform does the heavy lifting> 3. Staff and providers take next steps> 4. Staff and administrators have visibilityThe specific bet here is that instead of developing workflows that, say, are capable of sending the right information directly to the right people, we will keep faxing, forever, and yet another company will insert itself in the process and charge for the privilege

@ricci @regehr @mschfr I sort of assumed it was for transmitting messages for professors that got tenure in the 90s tbh, since they do not use email or computers

@jawnsy @regehr @mschfr fair shot at professors here but the people that actually do not use computers are the CTOs and lawmakers that determine our tech policy and making tech buying decisions

@regehr @mschfr I will also say that it took me a little while to find the specific AI fax company I had seen an ad for because there are a lot of them. A lot.

@ricci @mschfr I was at the instacare the other evening and the doc asked if she could use an AI thing to take notes. which I would probably say no to if I had cancer or something, but she looked like she was having a long day. I should have asked to see them. at least they're asking.

@ricci @regehr @mschfr It's so easy to forget about those people, they're never in the office. 😅I assume they're just busy doing this somewhere:

@ricci @regehr @mschfr And they can collect that information in the faxes for themselves. Win-win! 🙄
