The phrase "buried soils" from archeology gives me the shivers. Isn't all soil buried. No, not like this. Not like these frozen fields and lost and forever sleeping seeds.

@futurebird I wonder what the pedologists make of them? Do you ascribe a topsoil type to a subsoil layer?(I've worked with both archaeologists and soil scientists in the past. There could be some interesting interactions in the conceptual models here -- archaeological layering is much finer grained than soil science).
