some punk on the bay area reddit is like "what's this blimp flying over the bay?"blimp? BLIMP? BLIMP!?it clearly has an internal rigid structure, making it a zeppelin, not a blimp!

It's LTA Research & Exploration's Pathfinder 1, a prototype helium-filled ZEPPELIN. It's one of google founder Sergey Brin's pet projects.

their horrible website features a 3d model of the ZEPPELIN which I might want to steal, just on principle:https://www.ltaresearch.com/technology

a quick tip to remember if something is a blimp or a zeppelin:if someone goes "wow, a blimp!" you can slap them and go "You ignorant clod, that's a zeppelin!"

@foone They seem to download basic GLTF (if not passed through draco compression), just throw https://www.ltaresearch.com/GLTF/airshipNew.gltf into your favorite installation of Blender and you're golden

@foone and for bonus points you can stand next to the person saying it's a Zeppelin, take a quick look on Flightradar and than probably slap them, saying: Zeppelin is just the manufacturers name, that's a rigid airship!(I'm sorry 🫣)

@foone ah, like Comfrey MacLeod always said, "be gay steal zeppelins". (Well, I don't recall her being gay in the show, but she was the sort who was up for anything)

@foone so what are they going to do that is better than what the German company ZLT does? Or is this also just a modern day AI "we scraped the internet for content (with no regards to copyright or IP rights) operation? Like some _git clone https://zeppelin.de/ ._ sort of thing?

@foone Wow, thanks for that, I'm kinda shocked someone's making a rigid airship given their history (hydrogen, which everyone blames for the end of airships, was only a significant factor in them being destroyed because of the Royal Air Force igniting them intentionally, outside of WW-I most failed due to the difficulty making rigid airships work in bad weather. The worst airship accident was actually an American helium filled rigid airship, the USS Akron - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Akron.) It seems to be an inherent problem with the concept, given a lighter than air vehicle can be knocked into something else or twisted out of shape just by a gust of wind. Not that I'm against Brin doing this, so much research into stronger materials has been done in the 70 or so years that rigid airships have been avoided. I wish them luck.
