I am installing Linux right now. I can't believe nobody talked about this, or I never heard anyone. It sounds so dumb and horrible for desktop PC users... Gonna copy the important part:Efficiency Mode stems from their Sustainable Software Initiative (launched ~2021), aiming to cut global carbon emissions from computing by optimizing for energy efficiency. It lowers CPU power draw (via EcoQoS clock throttling and priority demotion), reducing background usage by 14-76% per Microsoft's tests, which translates to less heat/fan noise, longer battery life on laptops, and greener data centers. On desktops, it's more about ecosystem-wide eco-goals than per-box thermals—they want apps to play nice without users tweaking governors manually.

already on Linux Mint and configuring things. I know, I know, but I wanted something fast and super reliable because last time I had problems with my second SSD. Hope this time it has no problems *while using it*.The important thing is that I'm out of that abomination called Windows 11. Windows 10 was not bad at all during the time I used it this year. I'm not saying I'm gonna miss it, but it earned my respect.I lost my Touhou pictures collection, maybe I can get it back connecting to OneDrive to download them somehow?

sorry to beat a dead horse (?) but did you know this @Suiseiseki ? have you seen this in action and how it affects the whole system? because it's crazy I haven't read a single article on it before myself. It worked though, the hate was so strong and the throttling so bad that I wiped the entire disc with Mint Linux (now with MX Linux because is the best Linux).

@anokasion It doesn't really affect much at all - there was the "energy star" certification (the GNUbootable ThinkPads have that) and for decades windows has implemented power saving modes - but it was always possible to disable the throttling and set "performance mode" in windows (although crappy windows laptops have drivers that reduce clocks aggressively on battery to make the battery last more than a pitiful amount of time). The real reason for the slowdowns is intentionally incompetent programming to make the software even slower yet again - every time CPUs get ~2x faster, proprietary software gets ~2.5x slower to compensate - so you better go and buy a new computer. When it comes to power consumption, I did some calculations ages ago and it is far more energy efficient to keep using already manufactured "power inefficient" computers for several decades than it is to manufacture new hardware.MX GNU/Linux certainly isn't the best as it's proprietary software.

@Suiseiseki I didn't have the problem of CPU throttling with Windows 10 -if you did read some of my posts in the past, you know I am working with Docker and openLDAP at many... I don't know how to say it at this point, I was going to use the word layers but sounds so dumb.... anyways my point is that I didn't feel any throttling. Please don't troll me about this because it's regarding my job; it sucked having to do a lot of overtime because of the disaster is Windows 11 and most people I know IRL says it's the same as Windows 10. It's not the same.

@anokasion Yes, windows 11 is designed to be ~2.5x slower than 10 - thus ridiculously fast computers have fine performance on 10, but bad performance on 11.How the GUI is now a web browser (it's chromium) adds additional latency and slowdown.

@nigger oh I wouldn't have tried to render any X11 app on Windows never ever. Like, I don't even want to imagine how much must suck that code, which somehow you say it works (even with "normies" DEs, that's a fuck up already).Using the a hardware virtualized terminal though sounded more reliable. And it certainly was reliable -I am sure it used 3-6x or something like that the memory it uses on raw Linux, but it was enough for me to work with an open browser on the other monitor. After finishing work, I would close it and got my memory back to do other things, and yes, sometimes I needed to reboot because that memory garbage collector wouldn't work properly, but it was like 1/3 of times. But using any X11 app on Windows, no dood, I won't touch that. They probably won't fix it and prefer working on JS (or TS) because they are gay (no offense to gay people) and prefer working on that rather than raw C which is X.

@Suiseiseki @anokasion > and for decades windows has implemented power saving modes - but it was always possible to disable the throttling and set "performance mode" in windowsIt was possible indeed, but I can confirm this is not the case anymore with certain Asus gaymer laptops that have enforced power profiles that can't be tweaked on W10/11, your performance will be shit while running on battery, Winbloat degeneracy aside. Even if you have spare batteries you can't touch CPU power consumption and it's so aggressive many tasks are noticeably much slower, even emulating retro games from three decades ago feels slower.

@ube @anokasion What EULA?GPLv3: "You are not required to accept this License in order to receive or run a copy of the Program. Ancillary propagation of a covered work occurring solely as a consequence of using peer-to-peer transmission to receive a copy likewise does not require acceptance."GNU software is not bloated - although speed and memory use are a tradeoff, GNU software frankly uses little memory while offering extensive functionality.GNU software is the most reliable software you can get.Very old tests confirmed that GNU software was more reliable than proprietary software and the software has had bugs worked out and test cases written over the decades between; https://www.gnu.org/software/reliability.en.htmlAlthough portability is prioritized over speed, GNU software is not slow - often it is the fastest software available.

@ube @anokasion >its superior foss alternatives"FOSS" degeneracy is all proprietary.> probably because heres a billion and one half assed nonstandard double dash proprietary to GNU switches on everything slowing it downPretty much everything uses getopt() or getopt_long(), which is quite fast and adds pretty much no overhead - there is no possible slowdown once the argument parsing is done regardless. The long options argument format is well documented and everyone is welcome to document it - parts of it has gone into POSIX.The added options are to add essential GNU functionality that is severely lacking in inferior clones of GNU.

@ube @anokasion Have you considered that you are completely wrong?macos is a Unix as apple paid the fee and managed to pass the POSIX test suite.Although some code from macos was copied from BSDs, there was a lot of other code added from elsewhere, plus a lot of custom code was developed - therefore macos is not a BSD.
