A PC emulator isn't truly authentic until they make me degauss the monitor

@foone I've been working on this sort of thing for years for my PAL modulator / demodulator idea. not quite down to the magnetics & phosphor physics side because OOF, but certainly the way the deflector coils are driven with the resettable ramp oscillators triggered by hblank/vblank.

@foone Does the burn-in reset on each restart of the emulator, or is there a per-VM .burn-in file to provide persistence across boots?Or is it a per-user thing, where every VM you run causes burn-in on the same virtual monitor?

When I was a kid my Dad bought home a giant monitor from his work. It was being thrown out for only being 640x480! It was great for gaming but the best thing. A manual degauss button right on the front panel. I pressed it a lot!

@foone Hitting the degauss button on my monitor 25 years ago was always so satisfying. It never really seemed to do much but the sproing! effect was great.

of course the problem is that realistically no on is burning in their DOSBoxes. even I, someone who considers herself a "spiders georg" of time spent inside DOS emulators in 2025, just don't use them enough to cause that. the displays that did were ones used in businesses that were on all day running the same software

so clearly the emulator should come with built in templates to let you set up a pre-burnt-in monitor. different burn ins for different software, of course. a true connoisseur of CRTs can easily tell the difference between a CRT used for heavy wordperfect or dBase vs windows 3.1 and office

@foone I have a inkling of a memory that someone actually did that. It may have been a modern remake rather than an emulation, but the attract mode did simulate phosphor burn in from leaving the attract mode running for years on end.

@foone naturally you have to include the classic broadcast test pattern burn-in for the older generation of gamers whose parents frequently fell asleep in front of the TV watching a local station that ended their service at 10pm.

@foone If the emulator was compiled on one continent, and run on a different one, it should have slightly wrong colours, because it hasn't been tuned to work with the Earth's magnetic field in the right location.

@foone yup, this one my code can already do :Dit was originally written for the purpose of accurately representing lost hblanks to get that classic VHS tearing, but if you drop the vertical ramp oscillator frequency setting to something like 1e-6Hz it'll have exactly this behaviour.

@foone I thought we done that once when my dad left Baldur's Gate running all day, maybe even for multiple days when I finally turned the monitor off all of this static elements on screen. so all the trees and task bars and rocks and things were still there in black and white on the monitor, though I believe by next morning it had gone back to normal
