Last week I was sick on our meeting day, so I had a video meeting this morning with my German collaborator and we had a lot to discuss. 2.5 hours of looking at plots and wondering what the heck they meant... and we finally had to call it off for me to get lunch and him it's late. Anyway we're gonna do a 20 min meeting tomorrow morning to follow up on a couple things, but I gotta say, I love this collaboration on research via the internet. The internet has SOOO much potential to make things good

The fact that these big companies like Meta and Google and Microsoft and things are all enshittifying the world doesn't say anything about how good the internet could be, just about what those people are doing to pollute our social environment. Mastodon and blogs and things are all great. Do more of connecting with people and collaborating with them.

And it's exactly why I'm kinda demoralized that we saw most the Twitter refugees settle in BlueSky or retreat back to Twitter.Sure, Mastodon has its problems. But ... They're problems we can keep working on. Even if the worst case scenario and Eugen sold the code and Mastodon.social and everything else to Peter Thiel, so what? The code would get forked, the *koma code is still around, the Fediverse network would heal and recover. If BlueSky was bought by Thiel, ATProto still isn't mature enough to survive without BS, so the whole thing would collapse, and everyone would be forced to refugee elsewhere anyway.@Catvalente @dlakelan

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I think bsky's biggest failing though is trying to solve social problems through tech rather than empathy, and the AP fediverse largely still has that problem - it's just a lot cheaper to set up your own instance here!

@gareth@fedi.gareth-coles.dev @JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange the fediverse solves the single point of failure problem, but if every other large point ends up being a point of failure, that can demotivate people quickly
