Basically, is there a good way to get her a decent malware remover without using a browser on her windows laptop?

My sister has decided she hates windows 11 and is probably going to switch to using a Linux system. She used a Debian laptop for the last few years of her degree at Reed, back in like 2004 ish. Back when 802.11b PCMCIA cards were how you got that new fangled WiFi, and she wrote her undergrad dissertation in LaTeX so I guess she'll be in for a pleasant surprise. My mother's PC has been Debian / Gnome since 2007 or whatever so its not that unfamiliar to the family.

Last week I was sick on our meeting day, so I had a video meeting this morning with my German collaborator and we had a lot to discuss. 2.5 hours of looking at plots and wondering what the heck they meant... and we finally had to call it off for me to get lunch and him it's late. Anyway we're gonna do a 20 min meeting tomorrow morning to follow up on a couple things, but I gotta say, I love this collaboration on research via the internet. The internet has SOOO much potential to make things good

The fact that these big companies like Meta and Google and Microsoft and things are all enshittifying the world doesn't say anything about how good the internet could be, just about what those people are doing to pollute our social environment. Mastodon and blogs and things are all great. Do more of connecting with people and collaborating with them.

@futurebird Unfortunately, since no money changes hands by definition (economists definitions) the value of this service is zero. Fortunately for us, by the same argument, pirating music via napster causes no economic harm. Checkmate RIAA!

Look guys, I love you leftists who want to get rid of money and markets and things because you see all the shit they've caused. But the slogan "from each according to his ability to each according to his needs" is just... meaningless.Like, how much caviar do you "need" and do you need more IPAs or brown ales, or sake? Do you need brown rice, or white rice, or quinoa? What do we do with this ton of wheat? Whole wheat bread? Triscuits? Sourdough? Baguettes?

It turns out that markets have real actual uses beyond just making capitalists rich. So the question is when and how to use them, not whether to get rid of them or not.Money too, a means of doing calculations about which possible projects seem best, is really important. Lots of projects seem like a good idea but given say 100 of them, which ones do we do first? Where things go wrong is large scale concentration of power through wealth and political control.

Market Anarchists are still anti-state, and anti-police. How much farmland could Bill Gates "buy up" if there is no state to keep track of land titles, and no cops to beat the farmers working the land without his permission? Keeping things small, controlled by local "coops"/syndicates/etc and monetary systems based on public credit and public rules of banking etc is more what I'm about here. Anyway, just a halloween thought...

The difference between someone with a Billion dollars and 10 million dollars is a billion dollars, to round off error. When we are fighting against the rich, what's the point at which people shouldn't be able to get more rich? The answer is the point at which their labor is irrelevant to their wealth. That'd be the point at which a person who does no work, spends much more than average, still has growing assets.

Well after reading this long sarcastic newsletter on the whole NVIDIA and AI grift, I gotta assume we are all screwed. Seems extremely likely that the vast majority of GPUs sold that justify NVIDIA being the biggest company by market cap in the world are not even powered up. Which is a good thing because if they were we'd be destroying resources at an even faster rate. https://www.wheresyoured.at/nvidia-isnt-enron-so-what-is-it/

What if we just shipped RISCV binaries over the web and called them webRISC or something. Instead of a browser we could have basically curl + QEMU which we could call WebMachine. Maybe instead of HTTP we could use 9P. You'd basically mount a website and display files and run binaries off the site?Dont talk about 90s Java. that was just Sun trying to monopolize everything.

@futurebird @joyousjoyness That's cool. I initiated the Arden-Buck equation page (it's an equation for finding the vapor pressure of water from temperature). It's fun when you find a topic not in the Wiki and it becomes part of things humans can look up easily.

Everyone in the country whose paying attention understands that ICE is literal Gestapo, that they've been hired to ramp up terrorist tactics and smash any sense that anyone has any constitutional rights that mean anything, plus they are bait for eventually some citizens to protect their community with countervailing violence which will trigger a mobilization of the military at large scale to do all the shit the generals were told at that fucking Hegseth meeting.

@futurebird Incidentally I had a convo with my cousin a biologist and retired educator about endotherm/exotherm vs endotherm/ectothermif you're discussing a chemical reaction, that is not life, you say endothermic for one that absorbs heat from its surroundings and exothermic for one that emits heat to its surroundings... 1/2

Bitlocker is a Microsoft product that encrypts your laptop hard drive etc. Apparently, Microsoft exfiltrates a recovery key for your Bitlocker encryption and stores it in their cloud, they give it out to law enforcement at request. And of course, they give it out to whoever compromises their system and steals that info. Bitlocker is completely worthless trash. Do not rely on it for information security.https://www.forbes.com/sites/thomasbrewster/2026/01/22/microsoft-gave-fbi-keys-to-unlock-bitlocker-encrypted-data/
