Controversy aside, why do people generally end up trying hyprland as their first Linux experience?I'm just not sure what the appeal is. Is it that it's a tiling WM? Performance reasons? Does it look fancy? What's wrong with Sway or Niri? Are they just not as well-known?

@acidiclight Sway is a manual tiler and niri is scrolling both are great models but neither are dynamic tilers which automatically place windows into a layout, like Hyrpland (Think AwesomeWM on X11)Sway also lacks quite a bit in the ricing, window blur, border rounding, shadows, etc, there's also a solution for binding global shortcuts and a lot of other niceties, SwayFX closes the ricing gap https://github.com/WillPower3309/swayfx but Hyprland gets the attention because it has a lot of features people want.

@yukijoou @acidiclight Portals are a very big problem outside of GNOME, KDE and COSMIC, there's not really a good implementation, the based wlroots portal is missing basically every feature and Hyprland still is far from perfect in that regard but no one else is even competing. Over here in Niri it uses the GNOME portal in part for that reason

@BrodieOnLinux So basically it's a matter of, if you want dynamic tiling but don't want X11, hyprland is sorta your only option? Hmm.

@acidiclight There are some other dynamic options like river https://github.com/riverwm/river but on its technical merits and on the adoption of new features Hyprland is just better than everything else. One example is HDR, I don't think there is any tiler outside of Hyprland that supports it yet, I know Sway is close though

@acidiclight I know there's some fun stuff being worked on over in the Mir space but that's probably still a few years away and Smithay is getting a lot of push from System76 so I would hope that more projects get built on top of it like Niri has been
