Controversy aside, why do people generally end up trying hyprland as their first Linux experience?I'm just not sure what the appeal is. Is it that it's a tiling WM? Performance reasons? Does it look fancy? What's wrong with Sway or Niri? Are they just not as well-known?

@BrodieOnLinux So basically it's a matter of, if you want dynamic tiling but don't want X11, hyprland is sorta your only option? Hmm.

@BrodieOnLinux At least with Kate it's an acronym. KDE Advanced Text Editor. And kdevlive, "KDE non-linear video editor"

PSA: *Keyboard* focus, and *screen reader* focus, are *not* the same thing.

People ask me why I never use screen readers on Linux. It's because they can only read interactive UI elements that currently have keyboard focus. Those aren't the only things I want to be able to read. It is impossible for me to just have an image description, or a label, or an icon, read aloud when I hover it. I'd have to navigate through a bunch of input elements to get to it in the first place, or use some weird shortcut. The problem? I can still *see* my screen, but struggle to *read* it.

A screen reader needs to be able to focus on these non-interactive elements, not just rely on an input field declaring "I'm labelled by this label." There are interface layouts that do not have input fields associated with them, you can't rely on that.We need some reworks in the Wayland land, I think.

Contrast this to TalkBack on my phone. If I put my finger on something on the screen, it gets spoken aloud. Be it text, a picture, a button, an input field, something that's disabled, it doesn't matter. If I put my finger on it, it gets read aloud.

@Saorsa It's complicated. When it works, it's nice to have. But it needs to be a local model. Both for privacy reasons and because I may not actually have Internet. (I may be using the screen reader to help FIGURE OUT why I don't have internet). When it makes a mistake, though, it could mislead someone that can't see.

thinking of an article to write:"An Open Letter to All Linux GUI Toolkits: Please Use File Chooser Portal."Re-inventing the file chooser for each toolkit (rather than for each desktop environment) makes file choosers really inconvenient and hard to enjoy using, in my opinion.

Why do I care?GTK file dialogs put the "File Name" text entry at the top of the window, e.g. in Firefox.Qt ones put them at the bottom.I come from Windows, and I use Plasma.I'm used to it being at the bottom.I want it on the bottom. It should be at the bottom.

@Saorsa Which part of the post are you referring to? The non-profit hiring a blind programmer to do accessibility work for an open-source desktop environment, or the psychadelic trance song I linked to because it's a fun song to listen to while I write software, completely oblivious to the specific meaning of the word "woke" in either of these contexts? :)

@Saorsa I'm not an employee, I'm an independent contractor. And views are my own. You should read the fine print of a standard independent contractor agreement. I also respect the NDA I have also signed. If you are in any way against my legal right to share what I'm working on or disclose who I'm working *with* to make the world a better place for people like me, cease contact immediately. :)

@Saorsa If advocating for the visually impaired is against your moral or ethical compass, you were offered a chance to cease contacting me.I'm now going to exercise my legal right to *enforce* that you do. We do not agree with each other because I agree that those with disabilities shall be treated like humans and given a chance to live a fulfilling life. This evidently seems to be against your agenda, if you think anything I post on my account matches this criteria.

If I can walk into a weed store without being carded, then I should be able to use my computer without being carded. So if Discord ends up carding me, I will be moving my community to Matrix where I'm root.

I just migrated my GitLab instance from Docker to NixOS. And when starting to clean up the data directory after migration, I noticed a file with funny contentsCan someone tell me where this file came from? Because not even the KDE Invent instance admin has seen it lolCan I delete it? Will it break things? What is it for? Who's Chef?
