Today I learned that before the civil war men were school teachers. After the civil war teaching provided gainful employment to old maids and widows. And due to lack of men, the men were needed for labor.

@neanderthalsnavel when i was a kid in the 70s, my teachers were maybe 50-50 male/female. the math and science teachers were usually male, the english teachers almost always women, the civics teachers could go either way

@neanderthalsnavel wowi kind of have this idea that the sort of men who would be motivated to become teachers are not the sort of men who be comfortable in a mostly-female profession. Once women start to dominate, they quickly dominate a lot.
