       @foone Macos does/did this. It was part of the quarantine system. An extended attribute held a UUID, and the metadata got written to a sqlite database somewhere. Then the GUI file pickers did stuff with this information later.

       @foone rather reminds me of VMS, which for all it's faults as an OS had file versioning built in.  i don't remember what metadata it stored for each version but it seemed to be a lot at the time…
