@futurebird Well, except for ocean-floor burrowers or filterers like tube worms - those are sea miners.

@futurebird Honestly, "go to sleep and hope things make sense when I wake up" is a strategy that has served me well many times throughout my life

@futurebird I think that last sentence is the unstated assumption. That the meetings are bad and the person is getting nothing from them; the meetings are a pointless ritual imposed by someone with too much power to ignore. That assumption may be (often is) wrong, but it's why sending a simulacrum to the meeting is an appealing idea.

@futurebird The keyboard on the MNT Pocket Reform *looks* like it's about 60%, and it has mechanical keys... it has an open BOM so maybe you could use the same switches and caps for a standalone keyboard

@foone I'd think you could drive it off the GPIOs of a RP2040. I have no idea if a r΀ by itself could meet the timing requirements, but if it can't, the glitches might be interesting(Or you could go the boring route and use purpose-built video hardware I GUESS)

@futurebird Space stuff: atomic matter condenses out, first stars form, our star forms, something whacks the Earth to make the Moon, the Late Heavy Bombardment

@futurebird I knew someone online who had a list of books at their local library that had proved incredibly useful in the past. They checked each of them out every year or so to ensure they remained in the collection for other people.

@llewelly @futurebird @nora Coal seam fires (natural or human-started) can heat the surrounding rock enough to transform it too. Looks like the geology term for this is "pyrometamorphic" rock — includes coal fires, lava touching other rocks, etc.

@futurebird if it's a motorcycle battery it's probably a "cold kickstarting amp" anyway.

@foone I think about this a lot (and the book House of Stairs) while staring at some obviously-unneeded line of code with a comment saying, you have to leave this here, or something unspecified will break

@futurebird @jstatepost Ive read that sea urchins might do this — they have photoreceptors at the base of their upper tubefeet, and their spines provide directional shadows, and experiment suggests they can resolve light/dark regions as if they were one giant compound eye

@foone Macos does/did this. It was part of the quarantine system. An extended attribute held a UUID, and the metadata got written to a sqlite database somewhere. Then the GUI file pickers did stuff with this information later.
