last night i sent my girlfriend a kdenlive (video editor) project file, and all the slow motion effects were broken. they played correctly but had a big label reading "INVALID" stamped over them.we spent a while trying to work out what was going on. eventually we discovered you could fix it by changing the speed to something else and back (e.g. if it was 50%, change it to 51% then 50% and it fixes it).we saved the file as a copy, fixed one clip, then saved it again, and diffed the two files.we found what the issue was, and i suggested writing a regex to fix it.i then realised why this had happened: all the speed change entries got corrupted because i'd changed a bunch of the paths in the project file before sending it to her.with regex.rather than trying to write more regex to fix the issues i caused with regex, i just re-exported the file.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Not gonna lie at the first half I thought I was reading another one of those "kdenlive sucks" stories, but this is actually funny. I really like kdenlive.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space I use kdenlive almost every day for my SS14 videos. I also tried Shotcut, OpenCut and even Blender for editing videos. But none are as good a kdenlive in my personal opinion.

@SuperDicq frankly it's a story of the opposite. i'm amazed it worked at all.the format for 85% speed is something like<blah>0.8500:/path/to/video</blah>and my regex mangled it into something like<blah>../Assets/0.8500:/path/to/video</blah>and yet, it correctly identified the video it was supposed to belong to and the speed.if i had written this program, it would probably have just gone "syntax error on line 348,129" and exited :L

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Oh that's pretty mangled, indeed also surprised it still does its best to try and read that at all.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Also mostly I rate them in terms of workflow and not features. I do mostly basic cutting and I find the editing workflow of Kdenlive pretty fast.I can cut up a 2 hour livestream VOD into a 20 minute highlight video in like 4 hours of work or so, including transitions and effects.

@SuperDicq kdenlive is one of the best apps in the KDE suite. it's got problems -- LOTS of problems -- but it's honestly really quite good. i edited a movie-length video with hundreds of cuts and effects and it crashed maybe once. i ran into issues with some of the effects just not working, but otherwise, i'm really happy with it.oh and if any KDE devs are reading this PLEASE get hardware acceleration working, my gaming laptop struggles to render the preview in real time at 360p :(

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space i edited a movie-length video with hundreds of cuts and effects and it crashed maybe onceOh yeah but even issues like this are easily resolved by just editing your video into chapters and at the end just pasting those together instead of one huge file.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space I also do this anyway so I'm not afraid of messing up the entire timeline while doing stupid ripple edits without locking specific tracks in other parts of the project.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space What I'm mostly missing is some quality of life stuff.Like when editing a Title clip I would like to be able to see the actual video underneat so I can see exactly if the placement is correct.Or when using things like the transform effect I would like to be able to not have to drag the X and Y sliders individually but just place the clip in the correct spot in the preview window with the mouse doing both X and Y at once for example.

@SuperDicq @lynnesbian Nothing is better than straight ffmpeg for editing videos.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space No, for the complex editing that I do that would take forever.

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Oh, it's this button apparently. Never noticed that. I have edited 72 videos in the past 2 years manually dragging the X and Y sliders every time. Fuck my life.

@SuperDicq okay, i know this was three days ago, but...Like when editing a Title clip I would like to be able to see the actual video underneat so I can see exactly if the placement is correct.you'll never guess what feature i just discovered in kdenlive(in the "title clip" window, check "show timeline" in the status bar)

@lynnesbian@fedi.lynnesbian.space Because of all the things that I thought was missing were already there but I just couldn't find them that's a completely different issue than features not being available. Maybe it's better if they work on improving their UI and default settings instead then.
