       The memory hole expands: the term "cross-file" as used for referring to indexing with paper records appears to have completely fallen off the radar of major search engines in favor of a newer usage involving electoral politics. Only by delving into a literature search was I able to find references to the first form.        Interestingly not even appearing in dictionaries (which at least from the M-W page on "cross-file", are now deciding usage based on online searches.)
