@stux he may not have have been one of the greatest American presidents, but he was unquestionably one of the best human beings to ever be president. In a way, I'm glad he will not live to see one of the worst human beings take office to preside over the end of my country.

@stux NVIDIA's business model before "AI" was Grifto. After "AI" they will be looking for the next excuse to burn a lot of low-quality TFLOPs. There's no other way to maintain their inflated valuation.

@stux custody disputes where one partner is obsessed and violent are awful, and it's hard to know if intervening helps. Had something like that happen many years ago where one of my neighbors was trapped in the parking lot with her kid while her ex screamed at her. I ran him off and he came back a few nights later, pounding at her door wanting to be let in. Called the cops and stood there filming until he ran off. A few days later, he kidnapped the child. Eventually she got the kid back but :-(

The memory hole expands: the term "cross-file" as used for referring to indexing with paper records appears to have completely fallen off the radar of major search engines in favor of a newer usage involving electoral politics. Only by delving into a literature search was I able to find references to the first form. @david_chisnall @cstross @laird I've been thinking for a while that NVIDIA's operating model has become:1. Identify compute-intensive scam (crypto, LLM)2. Tweak GPU product pipeline to enable scam3. Push scam incessantly to get customers to buy tweaked products4. Identify next scam before previous one burns out.Also, there is a special place in Hell reserved for whomever decided to label smallish matrices as "tensors" in LLM-speak. They aren't *wrong*, just wildly misleading.

Is anyone doing encryption-at-rest remote backups to cloud storage from a Linux home network? I'm thinking of using a provider like Hetzner and lashing up something using rsync, but it's a bit out of my wheelhouse so good tutorials or examples are welcome. @stux the US presidency has been accumulating power since the 1970s, relative to the other branches of government. Now that the "president" has the supreme court and congress both utterly subservient to him, he is in fact a king in all but name. But parliamentary systems are not necc. better, look at Hungary - all you need is to get a dictator backed by a compliant legislature in power, once, and democracy fails.

@stux this is why you need more cats. My General Belisarivs occasionally Licks my hand when I'm petting her, but mostly she Licks Taoiseach Derpy. Initially she was semi-violent about her Licking rights and would literally pin Derpy down if she was not compliant, but their relationship improved over time and now Derpy actually seeks out the Licking. The vet complimented the General for her Non-Medical Interventions since Derpy is always congested and dripping from her eyes.

@stux I hope you can find a place where they can get some sun. I feel bad for my cats - I moved to a place that gets no direct sun for half the year. I can take them out on the patio under supervision but even that is impractical when it's wet outside. Kitties deserve to roll around in the warm sun :-(

@benjohn I was take aback to find out that garden hose fittings in Europe (or at least, Portugal) are Imperial-sized. I don't think many visitors bring their sprinkler nozzles with them.
