Thanks for speaking up Rudy (even though he did throw a dig at #ActivityPub in the thread). Good luck. I fear that only now will we discover the limits there, now that millions have made the move from #xitter etc to this "decentralized" platform.I'd love to hear more from the other defenders of #ATproto. As Elon said, #bluesky is demonstrating that free speech does not mean freedom of reach. You may have your PDS but who effectively decides who gets to see your posts?https://bsky.app/profile/rude1.blacksky.team/post/3m2n62lo6v22p

@wjmaggos yeah, I don't know if I'd say someone is still posting "free speech unimpeded" if someone's reachable audience is reduced from 5.6 million to 1500...

@ikuturso but the WWW greatly expanded free speech. you could post on your own blog and be seen worldwide. that was never possible before. awesome. but it wouldn't happen unless somebody in mass media talked about your site.same is true of your own AT PDS and relay etc. but unlike here where basically any AP account can follow you and boost you into worldwide virality among thousands of independently moderated servers, I can't see the BS relay ever not dominating reach. I hope I'm wrong.

@mastodonmigration I'm not 100% re visibility on blacksky but I believe so.I've tried to follow the blacksky story before this week and it's been a lot of back and forth about how truly independent they are. if you listen to the full podcasts talking about it, it starts as "we're indy" but then ends up as "we're almost there". same with other boosters of AT. they seem to admit the problems eventually.but I'm very glad Rudy is now openly addressing this. moreso and sooner than others.

@mastodonmigration yea, mastodon dot social and bluesky are somewhat similar in this sense. I'd love if AP had separate data stores etc.but ultimately, the way this all works out in reality is much more important than the theory (libertarians ugh). it matters more how most people respond to the tech choices AT/bluesky vs AP/mastodon make than what they could mean today or eventually.it feels like @Gargron and @evan understand/care about this more than @jay.bsky.team etc.

@wjmaggos yeah them bringing up their own appview should let them make this user visible on Blacksky while for now they're only visible through "Red dwarf" which IIRC is an app that goes directly to PDS without passing through AppView or relay.
