@Techaltar the problem in tech is always who it works for. but unlike everything else in tech that we can make open source and run ourselves, it will always be hard to make sure AI is working for us. even if it's created in the best way possible and now I truly own it, it will have certain biases that might make it work against my interests or those of the public.

The headline seems to be arguing that a decent percentage of inflation is due to consolidation and a lack of competition. That corporations can raise prices and face little loss of people buying from a competitor because they don't exist or at least not in many areas. Obviously this also leads to a lack of businesses having to pay more to get the best workers.But it's behind a paywall so the working class has less access to these data and arguments. @omz13 the goal is to reduce bias as a society so that we are able to deal with the world as best as possible. bias is inherent but by mixing our different biases together and not giving any of them too much influence, we can do this.

@stux what has never been public are their deliberations on how they plan to provide a ROI on the VC.I think it's about using their runway to grow and displace AP as much as possible, so that AT can become the protocol for "decentralized" social media. then because of how their protocol works and the costs involved, bluesky becomes the Google of their social web. everything runs through them, even though people could technically use alternatives etc. then they enshittify. my guess anyway.

Mike Masnick of #bluesky blocked me. He told me before to be nicer about them. I boost him a lot (sent the link to his paper to a lot of people) but I am also critical cause I really care about the potential of decentralized social media. I don't think I am abusive but I guess that's not for me to judge. Couldn't he have just muted my account?

@reiver if we had 100% portability, we should have an intro server. only allow people on there for a couple months but we could give it extra moderation and hand holding. everybody would know to give these folks an extra level of consideration.

@stefan @pahoittelemme @rolle blacksky exists because many black people didn't like the culture on bluesky either. we have culture problems but everywhere does. fundamentally I think our problem is critical mass. bluesky got that for lots of reasons, but the perception of them as simpler and better search etc might go away as other AT stacks pop up.[I think our big advantage should be that every piece of writing or AV could be an AP item, but we haven't seen much progress on that yet.]

@billyjoebowers but is there a better way to deal with it?the internet has everybody and it's not a problem when they post junk cause nobody is forced to see it. I think we'd do better to focus on all unwanted tagging (even if they think they are being kind and helpful) and less on mean stuff or bullshit that nobody who doesn't want to see it will.

@zotheca I think it's a mistake to focus on "community" with the fediverse, but it's very nice to bring your community to the fedi. Like everyone who listens to a certain podcast being on a server etc.I want everyone on the fedi. That requires a very open norm re interaction. Basically just no abuse.But communities are limited and should have any rules they want. More suited for group tech with more privacy.We're still struggling with balancing social media and social networking imo.

@rabble.nz on your latest podcast, you talked about how kids use group apps today. then referred to them as private or invisible social media.I think we should differentiate that as social networking, not social media. simpler but it also matters because they have different norms for moderation. we serve both goals poorly when we think they need to be the same.social media is old school twitter, built for virality (even w/o algos). social networking is what Facebook did well.
