PSA in case you weren't aware. I know that this word gets used a lot in Linux spaces to refer to DE customization, but the term "rice" has racist origins derogatory towards Asians.Would be really cool to find a better term in this case.https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/32468060 #linux

@daedalouseros Is it irrelevant how it's used? Like, if the term ricing when it comes to DE customization has nothing to do with the derogatory term isn't that OK?If not, where do we draw a line for words to be OK and not OK?

@raccoon I don't think the context matters very much here. Being as I am not Asian, I don't think it's my call to say it's not offensive. The term started in the car space first referring to cars of Asian make, then later would also be used to refer to cars with oversized exterior customization, so it has spread to the "customization" space and I don't see any logical way to say jumping from one medium to another makes it any less racist.

@daedalouseros But I don't understand how it's connected.I understand how using rice for cars made in Japan is racist, but I don't understand why that applies to Unix systems getting customized.I'm not saying you are absolutely wrong, I'm trying to understand, because considering what I know so far it feels like a stretch.
