Things I had not expected to see today: Deutsche Bank making a numbers based argument that "AI" is a bubble and won't last https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/deutsche-bank-grim-warning-ai-industry

@tante I've seen people saying this for a couple months now. Coincidentally, the technology seems like it's plateauing.I get the feeling it's going to be like the internet, where we'll really start to notice its impact on a day-to-day level in 10-15 years.

@tante I am nodding along with this in agreement but let’s steel man this position by asking:What if any self-serving motivations might cause those of us who do not think AI delivers the full value it promises to make such dire predictions?Am I just annoyed by change? Offended by the aesthetic inferiority of AI products? Threatened by the way creative and intellectual work is cheapened by the notion that it might all be “easily automated”?

@tante The cheerleaders see these as bumps in the road to the future— kinks to be ironed out on the way to a new economic order. I keep say “but it doesn’t really work!”Will that matter?

@futurebird @tante Intelligence doesn't exist.(No, really; there is no better definition of "intelligence" than there is of "holy": this group of people use the word about that thing there.)Someone selling something that will certainly transform the world when it comes newly into being could have an idea able to do that (steam engines, solar panels, etc.) but if they do, they can define it. They have something to measure. The AI boosters have no definition or measure. It's pure scam.

@futurebird @tante It doesn’t work for objective facts and reason, but it seems to work for subjective imitation of creative expression.I could really use this for DMing games to quickly make a description of a room, or draw up NPCs on the fly. I can’t afford $200 even for a regular character, but my players come in with amazing character graphics.I wont do it, but damn that is tempting.

@futurebird @tante I mean, I can appreciate the whole "perhaps I'm wrong?" thing as much as the next person, but LLMs are stealing machines that lie or lying machines that steal. Harvard Business Review coined a new term for the work LLMs do: workslop. They conclude that it actually destroys trust between employees and dramatically lowers efficiency, with non-LLM using workers pausing their own work to assess and correct LLM-using workers' contributions.

@tante Well it’s about time mainstream economists notice basically 3 companies passing the same money around holding up about 25% of the US economy!

@futurebird @tante i personally don't want to live through a great depression and be entering my 50s as my dying country's healthcare system and related social infrastructure collapses. i think if there's even a small risk of that happening we should take dramatic action (eg regulate tech and tax billionaires out of existence), that by no coincidence would make the world much better anyway.

@graydon @futurebirdI really like the definition that @tante gave in a talk about AI (re:publica 2023, great talk btw). It was something along the line "intelligence is when we assign someone agency". People without "intelligence" get legal guardians or have responsible parents, or are discriminated against, persecuted, genocided. Animals are straight up killed for meat or fun. Doesn't matter, they lack the intelligence to be afforded a right to live without harm, right? In the other direction, naming it artificial "intelligence" serves to humanize the machine while dehumanizing the humans and legitimizing algorithmic discrimination. No human is accountable anymore if the AI algorithm sends a drone to bomb civilians, deletes your free speech online, rejects your application.
