@futurebird @tante i personally don't want to live through a great depression and be entering my 50s as my dying country's healthcare system and related social infrastructure collapses. i think if there's even a small risk of that happening we should take dramatic action (eg regulate tech and tax billionaires out of existence), that by no coincidence would make the world much better anyway.

Greta Thunberg could have, by now, carved out a very comfortable life for herself as a liberal grifter-celebrity offering platitudes about personal responsibility at Davos. Instead she connected the dots between ecocide, capital, and empire, aiming squarely at the heart of the beast. And now fresh out of captivity she downplays her own suffering to recenter the urgency of aid to the Palestinian people. No wonder she's hated by the fascist+lib coalition that rules this world.

and more fundamentally, because these companies have not had a new product to sell since ~2008, because smartphones are more or less "done", design-wise, yet to keep alive a sense that sales might still grow exponentially they must create the sense of constant revolution, constant revelation and newness that everyone understands is not really there. so instead we get aesthetics, built around new (not-new) ways to occupy GPU shader units.

important to understand that a whole range of ideologies are essentially instruments for cauterizing one's own most basic humanity away, for turning yourself into someone who can sit there and watch another human being dying right in front of you, begging for help, and then turn to the world as they expire and proclaim "here's why that's good, actually."

One lesson from all this if you're a tech company looking to dump a horrific load of shit on society with zero care for consequences: you're gonna need to reach beyond your loyal bloodboy techies and build solid rhetorical bridges to guys whose identity centers on being "reasonable" and "moderate". Beyond the hype from your base you also need these guys throwing up the Nuance flag at the start of every discussion. They're critical to making your load of shit seem normal and unavoidable.

"but the world seems fine to me" - i dunno what to tell you. talk to more people. talk to people whose jobs are currently being turned into liquid shit.

there's a difference between believing that something has nuance and intricacies and counterintuitive truths (most things do!) but there are ways you can engage with an issue that doesn't invoke that to shut down critical perspectives. because shutting people down and telling them their feelings aren't valid is only going to make them more pissed off. that is an important Nuance of human behavior and those can be tough but ultimately it's a huge social failure to repeatedly whiff on that.
