@stephagain This is my phone. Without a memory card it is a dumb phone like we all had in the 90s. According to the instruction manual, if I put a memory card in it I would be able to access the internet. @stephagain It's right there on the list of services I would be able to use if I got a memory card. Without the card it only does calls and texts which is all I need.

@stephagain Yes, it's very frustrating how access to these apps has become pretty much compulsory, unless you want to be a friendless hermit!I don't currently have whatsapp, because if I did, I would be bothered by work related messages on my day off and I need my day off to be completely work free. If my kids were young enough to need me involved in arranging their social lives, I would probably get it so we weren't left out.

@stephagain There's a big ad campaign rn locally to persuade parents to switch from smart to dumbphones for their kids. I have no doubt that's part of a larger campaign, and eventually tech companies will clue in and come up with better.Just wanted to let you know there are options.

@stephagain @LostInCalifornia Is that really feasible though? Here in the Netherlands kids basically have no choice but to get a smartphone when they go to highschool at 12 years old. All the school stuff is handled online. With a smartphone, you won't know a damn thing. Your class may be in a different classroom at the other side of the school. Your phone will tell you and if you don't show, you get punished for it. For instance.. France different?

@LadyMont @stephagain Several school districts have banned phones, including LAUSD, the largest in the country. (I'm not sure if that's smart phones or all cell phones.)I can see a dumbphone for emergencies, but a smartphone not at all.

@LadyMont @LostInCalifornia it's banned in the school , all phones. you can have it in your backpack to have it on your way to school. some schools even take the phones from the kids at the gate. but it's not really necessary according tyo daughter cause they might glance at their phone in the toilet but other wise they don't really dare cause they don't really want it congiscated

@LadyMont @stephagain There are always a few parents like that. Society should make it clear they blame the parent. (The US has seen parents kill people because their baby wasn't allowed to be a cheerleader or a football star, and we had to pass laws to hold parents to account if their child murders someone.)That goes deeper than smartphones tho.

@LadyMont @stephagain Needs some organized opposition then.I have a love hatred relationship with teacher's unions, but they help protect teachers against narcissists. Also, I think the PTA (Parent Teachers Association) helps keep some of those types socially ostracized. Lets the parents and teachers meet each other and see each other as human (also, lets parents meets other parents.)Neither is perfect, but they help.

@LostInCalifornia @stephagain PTA isn't a Dutch thing. The few time parents do get 1 on 1 time with teachers, the teachers get told how to do their job. Parents meet parents and they talk about how shit the teacher is.
