From the "not everything is bad" department: We are down to 1965 levels of carbon dioxide emissions in the EU, after the high in 1979. We can and must do better, but this is going in the right direction. Source (possibly paywalled): https://www.statista.com/statistics/450017/co2-emissions-europe-eurasia/

Reduction of greenhouse gases emitted per country, 2023 compared to 1990 levels. Joining the EU results in cleaner air :) Also: Cyprus, what's going on with you? Source (possibly paywalled): https://www.statista.com/statistics/1223411/ghg-emission-change-european-union-eu-countries/

(In case you wonder, being a member of the Munich public library includes full access to Statista. And while Statista mostly collects data that is freely available anyway, it really helps me to have one place to get the data I need for complex topics)

Take from my posts what you want. As always, no matter what I say, the "yes, but" crowd immediately jumps at it to piggyback on my followers to deflect on their pet topic. My point still stays. We are moving in the right direction and can and should do more. I am an optimist. The "yes, but" crowd seems to despise any positivity and I won't go down their road :)

@jwildeboer Completely pulling out of my ass here, but hasn't most physical productions moved to other countries at this point - so it doesn't really make sense to only look at the specific region if they just moved the emission to elsewhere?https://rhg.com/research/chinas-emissions-surpass-developed-countries/

@jalict Here's a bit more detail. China is definitely a problem, but the US and India too. I wouldn't say that a lot of greenhouse gas emitting industry has moved from Europe to the US, though ;) https://www.statista.com/statistics/1379208/annual-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions-selected-countries/

@jwildeboerActually this is all very impressive and very good. Those appear to be substantial changes. Hell even the US has dropped, if only marginally, which, fwiw, anecdotally fits with common observations of just how much solar is being installed on the ground, anywhere I drive in the southwestern US. @jalict

@tomjennings @jwildeboer I can agree that the energy being produced is cleaner, even globally. My main doubt is that has the consumption moved down? Is green energy simple enough to hit climate goals or will we also have to reduce our consumption?I am not looking for a perfect world here; I think green energy has been more-so normalised, but consumption has yet to meet enough significant difference.

@jalict If all energy were sun-derived consumption (of energy) wouldn't matter at all.Not every thing is about everything. Jan's post was about electricity production. It's not about an infinite number of things.

@jalict Lol no problemo! No one can think of everything! And then we think it, then forget. We're drowning in facts and knowledge (and lies and foolishness : - )
