In the 9 months since, I have seen many posts by other people here, showing how some ruthless companies offer these botnets that abuse the network connection of unsuspecting home and mobile users through, IMHO, backdoor apps to serve as "alternative" for AI scraping and other nefarious uses when system administrators block the "official" scraping bots that also don't care about following any rules like robots.txt etc.

Mastodon is secretly sponsored by a cartel of cat food and cat toys manufacturers. Its main purpose is to get you to want a cat in your household so they can sell you more of their stuff. And it is working quite well, as far as I can see.And that's why Mastodon/ActivityPub will always beat Bluesky and other services. Smart stuff. Really smart stuff ;)#SarcasmButOnlyHalf #caturday

My evening thought:ActivityPub/Mastodon works best for groups of people that share some common interest. People with a "we" attitude. Where we talk eye to eye, not from top to bottom.Centralised social networks however have made many of us believe that all social networks focus on people with a "me first" attitude. The more egoistic people that base their value on metrics like followers and reach. That's a fundamental dilemma that pops up every time people move from "there" to "here".

(I would very much like it when you take this as #FoodForThought, not as yet another opportunity for endless discussions on details etc. Think about it, take from it what you think is good and maybe just leave it at that? Or come back tomorrow with replies, after you had a good night of sleep. That's a proven strategy for good discussions, BTW. The "I must reply immediately" urge is also a leftover from what centralised social networks taught you is the "best" way to become more relevant. :)

RE: https://mastodon.nl/@bert_hubert/115910470198130888Translated: All ATMs from all big dutch banks rely on Amazon AWS. So if there's a disruption with the US and you think to yourself "hey, I'm gonna pay with cash", you won't be able to get cash.

TL;DR Most EV batteries will last longer than the cars they’re in. Battery degradation is at better (meaning: lower) rates than expected. Slow charging is better. Drive EV and don’t worry about your battery. „Our 2025 analysis of over 22,700 electric vehicles, covering 21 different vehicle models, confirms that overall, modern EV batteries are robust and built to last beyond a typical vehicle’s service life.“https://www.geotab.com/blog/ev-battery-health/#GoodNews #EV #Battery

This also means that buying a used EV is perfectly fine. If the used car is „younger“ than 5-7 years, the battery will be fine for years to come.„How long do EV batteries last? The average lifespan of EV batteries will be around 13 years or more based on observed degradation rates.“

The amount of truly weird arguments to defend NOT being interested in switching to an EV in the replies is stunning.

Paraphrasing:- Electric cars will self-ignite after 10 years, that's just a fact.- Electric cars that have been on the market for less than 10 years have not proven to be as reliable as my 35+ years old car so it's a no- Something, something surveillance that seems to only exist in EVs- Do they support Apple CarPlay?Definitely stunning.

90 years after the 1936 Olympics in Berlin that were instrumentalised by an authoritarian regime, I will definitely not give a minute of my time or a cent of my money to a world championship from an organisation that invented a peace prize to appease another authoritarian. #BoycottFIFA #FIFAWorldCup2026

@dlakelan @Linkshaender They don’t exfiltrate. Users accept the default, which means to upload the keys. You can say no to that.

"Videos Appear to Contradict Federal Accounts of Fatal Shooting" is now more or less a daily headline, but due to #clickbait most media will still go out and publish whatever misinformation they can get hold of before they correct their reports. One thinks they might have learned to not trust these federal accounts, but hey.1/3

It seems the New York Times is now, finally, willing to speak out. Compare the headline in my first post and this opinion piece from the NYT to how servile the current WaPo headline feels. Both screenshots from just now, 2026-01-25, 10:06, CET.2/3

For those that come with "But NYT is an opinion piece", compare both current opinion sections for why I made my statement, here they are. Also note that my first post in this thread was the NYT headline "Videos Appear to Contradict Federal Accounts of Fatal Shooting" and the second post a follow-up to that.3/3

ADDENDUM: Instead of discussing the content, most replies focus on my form of presentation and that I am seemingly unable to differentiate between op-ed and journalistic articles. A wonderful example of trying to deflect. Well done, reply-guys :)
