@rowmyboat asks:Q4. What (cycle-related thing) *don’t* you know how to do? Do you intend to learn, or have tried to learn? Do you give a fig about it?[for ex, I can’t track stand! I have a lapsed cat 3 track racing license and CANNOT track stand.]#BikeNiteQ #BikeNite #BikeTooter #Cycling #MastoBikes cc @bikenite

@ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite to be honest I don't even know what track stand means.

@tregeagle @ascentale @bikenite when you’ve got both feet on the pedals & the bike is neither moving forwards or backwards or falling over. Skill for track racing and more easily done on a fixed gear bike than with a freewheel.

@rowmyboat @ascentale @bikenite oh, got it. I used to be a dab hand back in the day but alas, am out of practice.

@ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite a very specific thing I need to figure out it how to unstick the eccentric bottom-bracket on my Thorn Nomad to adjust my chain tension. Also, I am always curious about improving puncture proof tyres. We have very aggressive three-eyed-jacks out here. Maybe that could be a question for next week?

@TicklishHoneyBee @xtaran @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite agreed. I love my mechanical rear disc brakes. After destroying a hydraulic brake outbush once with no way to repair it. I now always opt for simplicity in roadside repair. I have v-pull cable pull brakes on the front though, again for repairability.

@ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite #BikeNite A4:The one cycling related thing I wish I knew how to do is set up and maintain tubeless tires. I keep putting off how to learn. I'm too content using tubes, so I haven't taken it on.

@MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite I always hear how messy tubeless can get but like the idea of self repairing goop. Not given up on inner tubes yet though.

@ascentaleI can't mount bearings. My back wheel was wobbling so I took apart the hub to clean, re-lube, and tighten the bearings. But the balls weren't in cages, and I couldn't get them back in. Off to the LBS (who didn't laugh at me, at least not while I was there) and they showed me brinelling on the bearing race, the cause of the wobbling. So it needed to be replaced anyway. But I'm not opening my bottom bracket for fear of losing more bearing balls.#BikeNite A4@rowmyboat @bikenite

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite tubeless are absolutely brilliant right up until they aren't and become a complete nightmare.Downsides people don't mention:1. Gunk dries out eventually (6-12 months usually) which means a trip to the bike shop or gunk on the garage floor. 2. When a thorn makes a hole and it seals, you still have a thorn. It's then prone to leaking when the gunk dries out, so you're walking home1/n

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite3. You need air pressure in the tube to seal well, so if it's completely flat and it's a big hole, you often can't get air in quick enough on the roadside, so you're walking home.4. If it's a big hole that doesn't seal, you can put a tube in, but don't forget all those sealed thorns which are waiting to pierce your new tube. Miss one and you're walking home5. The rim tape is a weak link. Install it wrong and it'll slowly leak.2/2

@Pionir @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite thanks, yes I had heard things like this. Many of the people recommending I've noticed are happy to let bike shops do the work. Unfortunately where I live we only have one bike shop which cannot always help. So, back to my mantra, "roadside repairable".

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikeniteI subscribe to the Schwalbe Marathon Plus or Continental Ride Tour club - overkill on tyre durability so you don't get punctures at a slightly (well quite large) weight penalty

@Pionir @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite I had schwalbe marathon plus for a few years along with a strip of rubbery reinforcement which I stuck inside the tyre with the inner tube pressure. This has been the best by far against the thorny desert environment. Unfortunately I recently bought some cheaper tyres which has left me deflated 😊

@tregeagle @Pionir @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikenite #BikeNite I had the OEM Specialized Sawtooth 2Bliss on my Diverge Gravel/Touring bike (with tubes) and was getting punctures left and right 12 in one year. And they were a bitch getting the bead on and off to change the tube. I was often having anxiety about being stranded. I switched to Schwalbe Marathon Efficiency tires, giving up very little in weight and rolling efficiency, though substantially more expensive. ...1/2

@tregeagle @MartyCormack @ascentale @rowmyboat @bikeniteI can't be arsed with the hassle of tubeless and never had a problem with a spare tube (only needed 3 in the last 30 years - one was my fault (pinch flat due to under inflation), one was for a "slime" inner tube where the seam split (faulty tube) and the last was shit WTB Resolute tyres.A friend at my club has had 5 punctures spewing sealant resulting in 3 train rides home in the last few yrs. Not a good strike rate imho.
