What a nightmare. “the perpetual future” sounds like the title of a cyberpunk horror novel.

@futurebird oh great, derivatives for made-up securities exist. This won't be disastrous, ever.

@futurebird A "perpetual future" is a particular type of contract to buy and sell something in the future - just without a particular time attached: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpetual_futures .But for the cryptocurrency scammers, this is just one more way to convince marks to part with actual money in exchange for virtual tulip bulbs.

@futurebird Finally; derivatives trading on imaginary internet money! What could be safer than that? </s>There is only One True Crypto, and that is GriftCoin. https://griftcoin.biz/

@futurebird Fun fact, the Bank of England just stopped selling perpetuities in 2015, and closed them all out, including some that had been paying out since 1720.

@futurebird Remember how awesome 2008 was when the derivatives were about mortgages attached to actual real-estate? Now the derivatives are about bullshit attached to nothing at all Super cool. I can’t wait. Everyone is going to be getting pretend rich for a hot minute! Then they will not.

@futurebird @book but you could sell that chair and buy an Imaginary currency with no protections. You wouldn't be able to sit down, but you can stand happily while you make the Donald and his petro despots even richer!

@futurebird i know this sounds dumb, but there is a good reason for it ... believe me bc I used to trade these products as a job despite my personal aversion to crypto productsthe issue is that crypto spot instruments are terrible to trade due to the need for blockchain settlement. so for institutional/professional traders, the perpetuals were a convenient proxy for the spot instrument ... of course this all assumes cryptocurrencies are worth trading, but insofar as there is demand for crypto, perpetuals and futures will be a key part of the ecosystem. they've been around on crypto-native exchanges for a decade now for institutional traders, but I guess now people want to market it to retail ...
