@mattblaze oh, i'm sure monetization will start in less then 10 minutes after you submit bank info. it's just being misleading about which direction said money is flowing. ;)

@Nonilex sure...afghanistan was bombed almost back to the stone age, first by the soviets, later by western alliances. ask any russian how fondly they remember the "victory" there and how effective it was.it's bad enough that the entire current administration is venal and corrupt. the fact that they are incompetent and completely ignorant of history makes it so much worse.

@ai6yr @douglasvb has anyone considered that the BMW is in some ancient sacred burial ground, with a curse on anyone who attempts to trespass? :)

@tomjennings @ai6yr pre AC, this was almost standard in large/fancy houses in the southeast too.

@tomjennings @ai6yr with the apparent complete disregard for climate change by our govt, i suspect we'll be "discovering" all sorts of 16th-19th century building practices used to deal with high heat.

@ai6yr @tomjennings there are some interesting modern twists too. someone was using old tires (filled with concrete?) in the southwest to build homes that buffered outside air temps and could use passive heat/cooling for much of the year.i'll try to poke around later when i have time to see if i can get a better reference.

@tomjennings @ai6yr not ideal that we're still making tires and using individual cars/trucks rather than more environmentally friendly options but this at least does something useful with the used ones.the other part of these i liked was doing stuff like using existing hills, passive heating/cooling, water, etc. to adjust temps rather than using fossil fuels or electricity.

@aral the folks that need to learn reality say "this is not who we are", but hopefully more of them are realizing it's really "this who we like to think and claim we are". that is a step in the right direction of more accurate. if they can't acknowledge that, they won't be ready to make real change.

@Nonilex the most useful part of this might be her saying the wrong thing and being the next TACO appointee thrown under the bus.

@tomjennings @benroyce guess my days as an english major and lots of 19th century lit had me bumping into it fairly commonly. but it is stunningly apt as a description of him.

@bortzmeyer if we're going to continue to allow older code to still work (i suspect there are still bind4 servers somewhere still answering queries), synthesizing NS seems the least icky way forward.

@Nonilex is there a legal point at which someone is so catastrophically stupid and incompetent that the damage they cause to the country constitutes grounds for treason?

@Nonilex this is all about enriching oil companies and getting some kind of kickback through the family in return.US citizens, US global security, mid east stability, military lives on all sides. they are all being thrown under the bus to enrich his oil pals.

@futurebird schools should be preparing kids for real life and teaching critical thinking skills. things like math & science will be a necessary part but so are "soft" and vocational skills. that means art, music, shop too. if we expect 18 yr olds to be mostly like adults, they'll need all of this.
