I'm showing fifth graders how to sew a book which we will fill with codes and encryption puzzles. They can all count in binary and came in very excited to learn since they heard about it from the older students last year.I get paid for this.

@futurebird That sounds so cool, I love it! You brought back memories of when I was primary school and decided to stitch a books together and put puzzles and treasure maps in them.I don’t remember where I got the stitching idea from? I know we didn’t have a stapler (or anything much in the way of stationery), so most of the time it meant we had to get creative. But codes and encryption…that’s a whole other level of fun and learning!

@futurebird so do they know what0.11bIs in binary? I asked a room of 25 software engineers, and they didn't know! I finally found one who did, in a software engineer conference of 250 people. But he was hard to find :)

@futurebird As the old joke goes,There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who can count in binary and those who can't.

@futurebird I've taught quite a few elementary school age kids binary, and they grasped it very quickly as well as extendingthe idea to other bases. Granted, their parents were all bright people, so the apple wasn't far from the tree. But I can remember learning multi-base arithmetic and set theory in 5th grade, after which it disappeared. I think maybe that was "New Math."

@futurebird That sounds awesome! I home school my 5th grader, are there any resources for this you'd be willing to share? Like instructions for the activity, or books that are age appropriate on this topic? Thanks!(Also thanks for being a teacher 🙂)

@futurebird YES.I'm running a club teaching 10th graders about sustainable computing and running Linux on our ten year old decommed MacBook Airs, helping them understand that e-waste isn't just bad for the environment, in many cases it is actually unnecessary for productivity. I get paid for this.

@futurebird taught th summercamp kidz a local algorithm to count in binary ztanding in a row. In fact i created a cicuit out of a dozen of them to do th counting and convert it into decimal. We also learnt a bubble sort algo with them standing in row usung only local info. No cpu necessary.
