@Werschweinchen yeah but some people mentioned that this would make iphone and Android fairly alike in terms of control and Apple is considered (whether it's real or not is another matter) to be a more privacy friendly platform

@danjones000 Good luck with that. Android basically fits the definition of FOSS since they release sources late and just dump them, and all the key device drivers are locked in kernel patches on actual hardware.

@boilingsteam I don't use side loading, but I'm switching to a Linux phone anyways.

@boilingsteam @bryanredeagle I'm also would like to know what phone you're looking to switch to. I was looking at possibly getting a Pixel 3a to run PostmarketOS.

@jahway603 @bryanredeagle PostMarketOS is probably the worst way to go about replacing an actual phone. Plus device support is atrocious. I am looking at Furilabs phones myself: https://furilabs.com/

@boilingsteam @jahway603 I ordered an FLX1 by Furilabs back in April. It's been stalled by production/shipping issues. They're working on a sister device that won't have the same production issues.

@boilingsteam Ride out GrapheneOS for as long as it keeps working, which may be for many years to come.iOS is not an option. Apple is only "privacy friendly" in comparison to Google, which is an incredibly low bar. And their overpriced phones are worse than Android when it comes to being locked down slop that you don't really own.If it came to it, the only choice would be to explore Linux options. Hopefully this sideloading scare encourages more development on that front.

@boilingsteam I would love if a Linux phone was an option, but so far it doesn't seem to interface with the rest of the world very well. :(

@boilingsteam I think there will be solutions to still sideload on Android. But if that really goes away, despite the open source nature of Android, then eventually I will switch to a Linux phone.

@ParisAbyssus only 4 choices in the poll... so i could not include that option. Although, you can imagine the sideloading things is going to get much worse if its not available on mainstream Android devices, so this will impact the amount of software available on 3rd party Android devices just as well.

@zevon sideloading is still going to be possible but they will increase the friction significantly, and that's all you need to sabotage a practice enough to make it almost disappear

@boilingsteam I have been using Graphene OS for two years now. I have no plans to change this. A Google Pixel Phone plus Graphene OS is the best solution in my opinion.

@boilingsteam I use an unofficial lineageos release on my second hand phone with a bunch of broken features like location does not work and the camera is a bit buggy. But i would rather have that than a bloated stock android or ios.

@boilingsteam @Werschweinchen Exactly. And I did it an year ago. Before that I was LineageOS user. I knew that the things were going to change in a few years, and here we are.And I am still happy with my choice.

@danjones000 its not about the device support at all. It's not even relevant. If the developers who develop the apps we typically sideload have to register their private info with Google and get a developer account, a lot of them will stop developing apps, and LineageOS won't be able to do shit about that.

@boilingsteam honestly, i use GrapheneOS on my phone, so google most likely, won't be able to anything to me, i don't even use google services to begin with, but if google enshitify the android open source project, i'll just cut my phone usage to banking apps and Open Street Maps and will look into better laptop that can run linux and lives 8-10 hours on battery, unlike my current thinkpad p14s g5 that lives only 3-4 hours.Grapheneos site is here: https://grapheneos.org/

That's just going to push people who do sideload apps to FOSS forks without that requirement. If I can't put IronFox (or another suitable Firefox fork) on my Google Android, I'll get a non-Google Android where I can get it.Joe Blow who puts his little app on GitHub isn't going to bother with that nonsense, so his app just won't work anymore on mainline Android, so fewer people will use mainline Android.@boilingsteam@mastodon.cloud

@danjones000 That's a bet at this stage. It's pretty much clear that in every walk of life, every time you add more friction, less people will go out of their way to do the thing they were used to do effortlessly. I hope what you describe actually happens, but that would be almost a miracle

@boilingsteam I can't even answer this poll, since all options are beyond a reasonable compromise and there isn't enough information on what exactly is planned, probably vague on purpose. If it turns out that only playstore approved apps could be installed and many foss apps would cease development, I might consider going back to feature phone and use different devices again? Really hard to say what the future might hold for us Flossheads.
