@boilingsteam nearly my entire app library is side loaded through @accrescent and #obtainium so this power play from Google would probably trash my phone workflow if I weren't also using #grapheneos instead of stock android. Won't affect alternate OS users at all.

@boilingsteam I think that's definitely what Google is aiming for in the future and I'm sure they will continue to try locking down what was once a fairly open platform. Fortunately, that future isn't here, yet.https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/115062539945447466

@boilingsteam I have a feeling the people behind the bad decisions that led to the bad game aren't the ones that will suffer the consequences.

@boilingsteam Ride out GrapheneOS for as long as it keeps working, which may be for many years to come.iOS is not an option. Apple is only "privacy friendly" in comparison to Google, which is an incredibly low bar. And their overpriced phones are worse than Android when it comes to being locked down slop that you don't really own.If it came to it, the only choice would be to explore Linux options. Hopefully this sideloading scare encourages more development on that front.

@boilingsteam My take is that CachyOS exists at an interesting crossroads in desktop computing. On one hand you have Proton and SteamOS helping drive adoption of Linux as a legitimate gaming platform(as foretold by https://boilingsteam.com/carmack-the-wise/ ), utilizing the rolling release Arch Linux as a base so software and firmware improvements reach users in a timely manner. On another you have the debacle that is the Windows 10 to 11 hardware transition pushing some users toward finding an alternative.

@boilingsteam So in walks CachyOS.Built on top of Arch Linux's pacman(unlike Manjaro which tried to replace it and ended up gradually incurring technical debt) for fast updates which is more necessary than ever because driver development has hastened since the Steam Deck came into existence a few years ago.And it defaults to KDE in its installer to soften the culture shock for Windows expats.I suppose they're just giving the people what they want.

@boilingsteam I agree. I tend to give KDE a pass because I view their situation as a balancing act between feature-rich and polished, where they clearly err toward the side of feature-rich. Both would be grand but that's not easy to achieve considering the scope of the big DEs.GNOME... I just don't know. Sometimes it feels like there's some crucial feedback mechanism missing in their development process. Been problem for a long time.

@boilingsteam I think XFCE is a good DE, but I don't think it suits the role of being a good landing pad for migrating Windows users.Cinnamon could be quite nice but it's behind in a lot of ways and I don't think it's in the best interest of a new user to be saddled with X11 at this point.Cosmic has a lot of potential. Too bad PopOS suffered for it. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I feel like Cosmic has a real shot at eventually being a fully featured alternative to the Big Two.

@boilingsteam Currently using an Arc A750. Actually very satisfied with it for the price I paid($200).Currently looking to upgrade but the GPU market is so awful that nothing really strikes me as worthwhile. The Arc B580 looks fine but it's also not that much of an upgrade over what I have already so it doesn't feel like it'd be worth it even at its current price($250).

@boilingsteam Yes, full AVC/HEVC/AV1 hardare endode and decode.Which I think the newer B-series Battlemage cards lack at the moment because they use the newer and less mature Xe Intel driver. That information might be out of date though so don't quote me on that.I found a surprisingly good article on the subject that I reference occasionally:https://www.faceofit.com/intel-arc-iris-xe-linux-driver-compatibility-guide/#video

@boilingsteam You know, that's a good question. I haven't really looked into it.All I can say with certainty is 2560x1440@60 as that's the highest I've attempted so far.

@boilingsteam The incremental movement and gradual Arch takeover in the first few years really emphasizes how bizarre CachyOS's ascension has been in 2025.

@boilingsteam Along the same lines as the AOSP situation, I don't trust Google's stewardship of the Chromium code. So all things Blink are out for me.While Firefox is certainly become a poor option, I still feel pretty good about its forks. I prefer privacy over performance so Librewolf(as opposed to something like Zen) for desktop and Ironfox on mobile for me.Praying for an independent project(maybe Ladybird? Servo?) to someday become a viable alternative. Browsers are hard though.
