Ideas for treating gout, gout diet, herbs, books, medication tips pros and cons? My son, who just turned 30 was first told he had gout when he was very young. I was not at that drs. appointment (divorce). Then It subsided. He has struggled with alcohol, although he seems to be better at now 30. He still drinks. He has texted me saying he is having a bad flareup. I told him he needs to get real about it and get it under control now. He is in very good shape (at least on the outside, exercises regularly and doesn't wear too bad, but over his birthday and Labor Day , was likely heavier than usual on the trigger things. It is on his dad's side of the family pretty bad and I have some arthritic stuff going on...

My husband (much, much older) is having a flare up right now too. He has only had one flare up in his life (2 yrs ago) and 'cured' it by taking 10K mg of vit c powder on day 1, 9K on day 2, 8K on day 3, until you get to 1K. Then continue taking 500 mg per week as maintenance. (He mixes it with water and spreads the dose throughout the day - it's important to drink plenty of water when you have gout). He quit taking his maintenance dose about 6 months ago, but that could just be coincidence. My husband's Dr prescribed meds, first time Colchicine, this time Allopurinol (you wouldn't believe the side effects of either of them), but he is doing the vit c regimen again instead. Hopefully it will work this time as well.

Thanks so much - I had heard a little about Vitamin C, but this is the most specific info I have seen. One reddit etc. some people have had luck with tart cherry juice and supplements (guessing high in vitamin C). Some swear by the medications and it gets testing to research because they scare you with stories of future pain and deformities.

I'm a big time fan of Vitamin C for a broad spectrum of general health benefits & immune boosting also water soluble B12 that is widely deficient in our diets & worse in anyone who has regular-high alcohol consumption.. low B12 has a lot of physical & mental effects like depression that can lead to more drinking. I'd recommend both. https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements-vitamin-b12/art-20363663

I didn't know about cherries the first round, but I picked up a 1976 Natural Remedies book at a thrift store and it mentioned a Dr Ludwig W Blau and his Cherry diet control for gout and arthritis and gave some interesting examples. His article was published in Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine Vol. 8, No. 3, 1950. That article is available here:https://archive.org/details/sim_texas-reports-on-biology-and-medicine_fall-1950_8_3/page/n1/mode/1up

Nice! My immediate reaction was the milk thistle combo tincture I take for my liver which includes dandelion and artichoke. Alcohol puts alot of pressure on the liver. Uncertain whether available in the US.

But beyond knowing Bishops weed (ground elder) had a traditional use for gout (Bishops had rich meat diet with lots of alcohol!) I did a search.I rather liked this site which confirms alot of above advice but adds some others... with the addition of other sufferers experiences. I hope it improves and his drinking decreases.https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/gout.html

Uric acid is almost insoluble in blood serum. Alcohol decreases the excretion of uric acid. Cause of precipitation of uric acid salts around joints is not known as a fact. What role does some joint trauma or stress play? People are different and experience different factors and ignoring this fact leads to a lot of ideas which cannot be tested other than on a few and without uniform consistency to state cause and effect. If the pain is not sufficient to stop the alcohol consumption, then wait until it occurs in a knee or another immobilizing site. It will.

He started running and his first attack when just a kid he was wearing motorcycle boots, so I am guessing trauma may play into it. Yes, he will have to decide re: the drinking vs the pain/damage. One of the books I checked out at the library talks about uric acid doing long-term damage to pretty much everyone, even if not currently experiencing symptoms. The book really talks about fructose from processed foods being a big culprit. The book also talk a lot about COVID and that we all should be wearing glucose monitors. The author has connections to the company and the Means siblings. Sigh...there seemed like some solid info., but I can't share that book with anyone.

This recent bout followed a long birthday celebration with lots of beer read meat, cake with ice and all that. I woke up the same day he texted me with pain in the same area of the foot, just on the opposite foot. Sympathy pain? I also get some weird toe/feet stuff and arthritis stuff. I was once told aI had the gene for rheumatoid arthritis, but that I didn't have it, when I was going through some health challenges. I look at this as a chance to improve my diet as well.

He sent me a picture - not sure it is gout - lol, but I still think the tips and diet are good overall, for all of us - likely. It is on the side of his door and he has purport and bruising. Im worried, like a mom. Pupura , kind of like rashes, can be sort of anything - from mild to serious. I told him to watch for signs of cellulitis and such...I didn't want to send him all the worrying stuff. sigh - thanks to all who have pitched in - I am to thoughts on puparia and bruising and pain (no trauma). Was camping and likely barefoot a lot at the lake.

It could be - Poison oak in our area and he is very susceptible, but no itching, Of course when I look up purpura and bruising there are all kinds of things it could be from mild to horrible. I worry because he got the vaccine and so my mind "goes there," although I try not too. He says his foot is now 90 percent better. I am still encouraging the healthy eating and reducing uric acid (for me too). thanks for all your wisdom.

Worry is always on the menu for moms.. my son is a hemophiliac so pupura spots have always been possible with extreme stress and micro-capillaries bursting.. when he was small and crying hard they would speckle his face.. also foods like pineapple the closes he got to anything blood thinning which includes every OTC med but Sudafed & Tylenol.. every Rx drug but codeine & morphine have assorted blood thinning qualities.. again Vitamin C is awesome to strengthen capillaries... 1,000mg twice daily or 3 times under stress or w healing.. Remember to breathe mom.. very often our worst fears let us miss the simpler answer.. changes in laundry detergents & body products are also easy to miss sources of skin problems.. fingers crossed & hugs for all the mother fretting kiddies rarely know we do!! <3

Thank you - when my son was a baby, the doctor suggested we see a neurologist, for various reasons, and I got the bill and I called to see why it want covered by insurance and they said because we don't cover mental retardation." Well...this started a long series of tests and it was a misdiagnosis. It was something and I feel part of my beginning to question things - thanks so much for the reminder -Trying to not worry and be thankful. Appreciate the advice. Hugs to you and your son/family.
