Heh just upgraded my vm server to 192gb ram.I got tons of ram now. Desktop has 64gb VM server 192gbJail server 128gb May not be modern. But the system runs great. Having tons of ram that’s cheap. Makes it very usable. There’s nothing that limits me with them yet. @dexter I’m still running those westmere as bhyve VM CPUs. Be a decade next year lol.

@SlicerDicer Very nice! I've been finally hitting limits of 64GB RAM on my SmartOS server. I have too many zones

@stratacast Grab some old westmeres and stack them with ram. They are faster than cloud services for most tasks. I even run my poudriere on them. Cheap ram, cheap CPUs, cheap hardware. They just work and keep going.

@SlicerDicer I have a 12 core Broadwell that is doing very well right now, I can upgrade it to 128 but I think that's like $400 still :/

@stratacast Find cheap shit on eBay. You can order the whole damn machine packed with ram and parts for cheap if you need. I got 192gb with full hba and 6 bays for $200. Recyclers or eBay.

@SlicerDicer Always my go to :) my server only supports 128 but that is ample right now, since my next bottleneck is the processor haha. There are 18 cores available for cheap, but when I saw how insane the new 16 core AMD EPYC processors are with performance and power, I am debating just saving for that and making a solid 10-15 year server

@SlicerDicer I'm going on 8 with mine, and another...I guess it's 16 year old box now (except I bought it in 2016 I think) that still hum along. I've just found for some of my projects I need a little more cpu poop on the single core side

@stratacast I mean do I wish it was bit faster? Yeah but end of day it’s fine. The bottlenecks I had are resolved by using nvme.

@SlicerDicer How'd you manage to get NVMe in such an old box? I THINK my box supports it

@stratacast I use SSD for host, NVMe in pci slots. The x8 slots of the riser are NVMe. I have 4 slots in the one that runs the VMs. No big deal. You can’t boot from them but you can use them.

@SlicerDicer Hmm, okay. I should see if I can do that in my box. I boot from USB so NVMe booting is a non-issue

@stratacast Just get the cheap nvme adapter. I just use whatever works and is cheap.
