While most of the feedback on the #deltachat V2 releases has been positive, some users sense a de-prioritization of "classic unencrypted email" usage. Indeed the current dozen or so contributors aim to evolve an exceptionally resilient and versatile private messenger app suite, with end-to-end encryption the primary focus and design foundation. However, we would support friendly forkers to develop a classic e-mail focused app suite -- say "deltamail" (work title). What do you think?

@delta having *the same app* bridge people on existing email infra to the #privsec crowd has always been the biggest strength I appreciated Delta Chat for. forking, dropping legacy SMTP, or any such abandonment of that bridge would turn Delta Chat into just another chat protocol in my eye. if I'm going to push people to adopt secure messaging, Signal would always be the easier sell.

@travisfw @delta 100% that. Exactly. We use both deltachat and signal at home, the big advantage of deltachat is the easy interop with traditional email. Especially imortant for the kiddos who can easily chat with their friends thanks to full interop with regular emails. Chatmail relays are solving problems, sure, but if deltachat starts its own silo with chatmail relays (for all the best reasons in the world, ofc), then it looses its value for us.

@severin @travisfw @delta how does Delta Chat gain wider trust as a secure messenger if there is any insecure messaging capabilities supported, though? This always leads to reputation issues whenever it gets tested/reviewed by security thought-leaders.Additionally I find it to be nearly useless as a plaintext email client without support for folders, integrated spam/junk filtering, and sieve or other filtering capabilities. I can only imagine the people who use DeltaChat with plaintext email receive very very few emails every day.

@hj @delta @travisfw @severin I agree that email would be more useful in general with clients focused on sorting messages by sender/contact and then threading inside that view instead of the current method of emails all being threaded by subject. This would give a more chat-like experience and I think it's more efficient when you have a lot of messages to deal with.Email in its current incarnation is a burden to deal with once you exceed a certain number of unread messages (100?)
