@devSJR there is a blog post coming. bear with us :)but roughly the current first multi-relay release introduces the ability to have more than one relay associated to your chat profile. You can choose what is your primary device, but will receive messages also on all secondaries. This is just an intermediate step towards another release where the outcome will be: if any relay works, the message will get through. single relays failing don't matter.

@sjosjo for Tor there is nothing immediately planned but you may checkout and follow updates on https://github.com/chatmail/relay/issues/487

Your chat profile/identity: a tar file.Your social web app: a zip file.https://chatmail.at and https://webxdc.org are spearheading ever new and more fun ways to deny power to servers and platform billionaires.Unlike classic email servers, #chatmail relays do not store user identities which solely live on end-user devices. There also is no encrypted value on the server like with Proton Mail or Signal. There are only relays, endless federating networks of relays to onboard safely :)

#chatmail relays are recently getting more artful in their web presence 🤩 Nice examples: https://darkrun.dev in Ontario, or https://bloc7.icu/ in Warszawa. We estimate there are ~4 times more relays than in the published list at https://chatmail.at/relaysMany relays are smaller ones, but that's fine. A 5 EUR per month VPS can go a long way (thousands or tens of thousands of monthly users). Thanks for the service to all the operators of which around 40 are in a loose group chat 💗

Short and succinct, @neil lays down the incredible danger of the UK's current political talk about "banning under 16y olds" from using online services.UK's "age assurance" is similar to #chatcontrol 's "age verification" plans: the end of privacy when using online services. Basically policing everywhere demanding "show me your passport!" before you can cross the street to a web shop or forum. https://decoded.legal/blog/2025/12/a-proposed-legislative-amendment-to-attempt-to-ban-under-16s-in-the-uk-from-common-messaging-services-sharing-family-photos-using-wikipedia-and-doing-much-else-online-by-imposing-age-assurance-on-everyone/

Relax 😎! GPG is not OpenPGP!Yesterday, vulnerabilities were published https://gpg.fail but they don't affect #deltachat or other #chatmail clients becauseA) We never used #gnupg for anything; we use the modern #rustlang #openpgp implementation @rpgp, security audited multiple times.B) #openpgp is fine, as modernized in #RFC9580, which already warns against several #gpgfail issues (gpg didn't implement that spec)Please spread the word that #gpg is not #openpgp ... Thanks! #39c3

#39c3 .ending .. quite an enjoyable blast, and thanks to all the wonderful people just dropping by to say "thank you, it all works very nice for us"! 🥰 Certainly raised team spirits :) This year around, apart from one #chatmail relay setup workshop we didn't do any registered events at congress. Pushing out releases, Illnesses and engagements in various other organizing prevented more public sessions. Next ones will be around #fosdem2026 where also several of us will be around. Cheers!

It's true: the more technical background and pre-conceptions you have, the more more likely you run into trouble with #deltachat 😂Don't think so much! 😉

Iran may be on the verge of Internet shutdowns again. If you have friends or family in #Iran, now is the time to let them onboard for example with https://tiiiz.ir -- because using in-country servers helps to stay connected. If you need support for setting up a relay in or for Iran, send us a DM and we'll see to connect you with other knowledgeable operators.با آرزوی فردایی بهتر...

@lazarus @daniel #XMPP is still a thriving ecosystem with lots of good FOSS developers doing interesting things.XMPP is also used under the hood in tons of products needing instant messaging even if they are not advertised as XMPP clients, or do not federate. Anyway, XMPP and #matrix all share a strong focus on protocols, but there is a big difference: https://chatmail.at does not expose protocols to client developers, just a Rust SDK.

RE: https://chaos.social/@omidz4t/115827635159087952We support folks who in turn support friends and family in #Iran, to provide resilient private chatting. #deltachat is running pretty reliably and well so far. See also https://chaos.social/@delta/115808705832876995

@soatok please read more carefully the source code. You are in the "else" branch of "if strict_tls" and strict_tls is True by default. It's pretty deep down in advanced menus to opt out of the default strict tls handling (with RustTLS btw). Opt out is needed for some users who would otherwise have no TLS at all in their national environment, and where they often use public WIFIs, so eavesdropping cleartext from people around is trivial but cracking RSA1024 is not.

#iran mostly shut down now their own state-aligned national messengers that they previously positioned as alternatives to Western messengers and Telegram, especially for when the internet is nationalized and locked down. There remain some islands of functioning delta messaging but the lockdown of private comms is truly dire, and likely a precursor for heightened violence. This correlation is not a political stance but reflects research in internet shutdowns of the last decade. #deltachat does - no bindings to public handles/numbers- no address-book upload - not do public contact or group discovery- not have critical persistent server state (!)Social identification is private, between people though ephemeral #P2P #E2EE messages.Servers see messages with random sender and recipient addresses, but those can not be mapped to a phone number or public handle. Servers see IP addresses. But you can use Tor, or a VPN, if you want to hide that. It' not all bad :)

#deltachat and #chatmail and #webxdc are in a unique "market" where few other cross-platform messengers can play. The unique and growing market is shaped by rising authoritarianism, internet shutdowns and restrictions. We are building a "Minecraft world of messaging" where skilled people can rip apart, modify, replace, recombine and do modding, at every level. What do you think is currently the most interesting decentralized messaging system when Signal and its server infrastructure would be more severely disrupted tomorrow?

A lot of messaging systems try to reinvent the email system but many (signal, matrix, xmpp) took over one key traditional design which we actually dropped while retaining SMTP/IMAP compatibility: server-controlled identities. With #chatmail user identities are cryptographic and reside on end user devices only. Servers are only message relays and have no control over identities or chats, only perform fast message routing. It took a while but it's shaping up nicely :) Post-Quantum Cryptography and Reliable Deletion, better known as Forward Secrecy, are going to become available in 2026 in #deltachat. For more details, including the recent #fosdem26 talk recording: https://autocrypt2.org

@abbas_dp congratulations! You have done an incredible job showing and living the power of free and open source decentralized infrastructure and culture! We are very grateful and humbled that you could put to use our now years long efforts on providing decentralized resilient #foss messaging infra and apps, for anyone to use, inspect and modify! Wishing all of you the best of luck, health and safety!

@qyahxm of course delta chat supports end-to-end encryption and a pretty solid and audited form at that. See https://delta.chat/en/help#e2ee for more details.
