Why do American local newscasters talk with the strangest cadence? I understand the mid-mid-alantic accent, but why do they always sound both amazed and bored?

@futurebird Because they want to retain your attention (or grab it, if you've just switched the telly on) but also want to sound authoritative and in control.here's a video on how influencers change the way they talk to grab your attention:https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XFqnwn0cLhE

@futurebird wait until you notice that most of them talk out of one side of their mouth, and hold their face slightly crooked

@futurebird What do you mean by mid-mid-Atlantic? What I think of as the mid-Atlantic accent isn’t the newscaster one. It’s a relic from a century ago, when upper-class Americans tried to sound half British. Like Margaret Dumont in the Marx Brothers movies, or in her own way, Katharine Hepburn. (Cary Grant maybe too, but really no one else talked like that.)

@futurebird newscasters in other languages have a newscaster accent too. A friend who was a journalist would do it for us after beers.

@futurebird The series For All Mankind had real historical anchors reading alternate history stories. This was done a little before the current gen of convincing deepfakes, but still pretty realistic. That said, that cadence you're describing was replicated, but in a very uncanny valley way. It was a spooky.
