In my congressional district Obama walked away with 97 percent of the vote. In the most recent election Biden only won 78 percent and turn out was way down. This is the South Bronx. We have a lot of immigrants, both those who have become citizens, those who want to, and some who at present can't. Something I heard canvassing stuck with me. "People come here they don't learn English they don't become citizens and now ICE is going after everyone."

The Democratic party looks at our district. Looks at Biden winning in the 70s and thinks it's fine. It's really not. The other big issue is, of course, the economy. There are a lot of people who live in the US for upwards of 5 years, but they don't have a path to citizenship. In the Bronx "amnesty" and "open borders" aren't popular."Learn English, take the test, say the pledge or move on." was the vibe but with recognition that this just isn't possible.

Because citizenship is valued and meaningful the sense that Democrats don't really think it matters that people are in this gray area is a huge source of frustration and annoyance. But emphasizing any set of requirements or steps to become a citizen eg. "learn English" is something both the left and liberals avoid.

I think it's a point of disconnect between wealthier Democrats and everyone else. Liberals hate the idea of imposing culture because assimilation can be a violent process. But some of the people who you think may be helped have already faced and struggled with assimilation with being a foreigner. And realistically NOT having a clear process causes more harm.

To a lot of people Democrats seem to dance around never really saying that YES all of these people should be citizens because the people living in a country have a responsibility to participate. Some people just like things how they are now and don't want it to change. And Democrats are terrified of anyone thinking that they would make a clear process that might lead to them winning more votes. Which is crazy. It makes them seem sneaky.

@futurebird There's (from way over here) four things going on.Incumbent Democrats are structurally committed to white supremacy because there is no way to be a rich american and not be committed to white supremacy. (Intellectual opposition is not willingness to be less rich.)The US has a long history of genocidal responses to the prospect of not being a white majority country; you're undergoing one now. This is foundational/definitional, not merely normative.

I guess I'm suggesting that a clear hard line policy that's inclusive is better than a hard line policy that's exclusive and racist. Though what the Republicans are doing isn't "clear" it's just hard line. They put the line wherever they feel like it. Mostly to box out people they don't like at any given moment. But Republicans *say* things that sound much more clear.

@futurebird We can also talk about how border policing gets at least 100x more money than any state capacity or programs associated with legal immigration and citizenship. That is definitely part of this problem.

Most Republicans think that "millions of illegals" vote. Democrats worry and fret about dispelling this myth in the worst way possible. Not by saying they think there should be a clear path to citizenship with reasonable rules because a lot people who can't vote should. But rather by saying "no Biden was VERY tough on the border"That makes it sound like people can come over the border and just start voting which is bonkers.

@futurebird In reality there is no need to push for learning English because economic forces do it alone. If you don't know English you are sidelined to the lowest paying and most dangerous jobs. The people who don't learn English are usually the ones who don't have the time to do it because they are working too many hours. The ones working the two or three janitor jobs.

@futurebird Now that I had my coffee here's my more coherent thoughts. As I say to my class, and other people who have said such things to me, and backed up by research, assimilation and acculturation is a roughly 3 generation process. Gen 1 immigrates and does the best they can.Gen 2 is born here and lives in a halfway point between both worlds but can operate freely.Gen 3 is mostly a fully assimilated member of society.1/#geography #immigration

@futurebird There is also this dynamic that when people are together speaking the old country language, others assume they don't speak English. The majority do, though. The bulk of immigrants do speak English. I know very few who don't.

@futurebird Both parties reinforce the same myths, both parties have the same basic policies. Obama still has the record number of deportations both in absolute terms and per unit of time, and his policy an rhetoric empowered Trump now.

@futurebird if only most of these republicans had to go through the immigration process here in the US... Then, they would know how impossible it is for the undocumented to vote. But then again, this was always some cheesy talking point for red, republican garbage. PS: The only way that a undocumented person can vote in presidential election, is for them to become a citizen...

@futurebird it's weird that anyone left of center acts as if this is hard.1) freedom of movement is a basic human right.2) open borders are good, actually.3) the path to citizenship needs to be short and open to everyone, regardless of their immigration status. Everything would be better if democrat leadership weren't cowards.

@futurebird I wonder if the government starts treating citizens more like “illegal” newcomers in great enough numbers (random searches, detentions, renditions elsewhere — things Trump has said he’d like to do to some citizens) perhaps *then* folks will start identifying more w/ their shared humanity and less w/ a “legal vs. illegal” divide. I know that’s not practical advice, but just an attempt to frame the blindness to common cause that Americans persist in.

@futurebird as a former immigrant in the US, the belief that there is a path to citizenship for anyone who "comes in the right way" or just "does their paperwork" was immensely frustrating to me. Everytime I saw a Democrat response to bad faith Republican talking points, I just wanted to go be like "why can't you just spell out that there IS NO PATH to citizenship or even legal permanent residence, to a lot of folks who came in the "right way", who "did their paperwork", — yes, even to folks privileged enough that they are fluent in English (and quite a few even have higher ed degrees), and fully understand the process, and all of the legal options available to them".Also, claiming asylum after crossing the border IS a valid legal pathway, and it was also frustrating to watch everyone accept that it's not just because Trump said so, and Biden not only not reverting that, but doubling down on even more roadblocks to a valid legal path.

@futurebird I think that you should stop supporting American institutions. Do a community defense and mutual aid organization, start building dual power that will leave people less reliant on the state. Treat all politicians the same way you'd treat local drug kingpins: be wary, but no respect and no illusions that they will help.

@richpuchalsky I already participate in mutual aid a great deal. We run a food pantry, help people find housing, legal help, landlord help all kinds of things. What are we supposed to do in addition (and we don't really have any extra time or money but if we did, or if we cut back on that other stuff) what are you talking about? Starting a militia?Trying to build a wall around the Bronx?

@richpuchalsky IDK Rich sometimes it feel like we are by the side of the road with a broken car with steam coming out of it in the middle of the desert and you sort of walk up and say "Driving is ruining the planet, we should have a high speed rail network."And ... yes? we should however, about the car.

@futurebird Having your car break down in the desert is an individual-family thing. There is always someone to help, or if you fix it you can drive and get help. Some problems just don't have good solutions and I would be lying if I said there were some. "Oh no our civilization is breaking down because of bad decisions over decades" is not something that an anarchist can say "Oh this is easy! Do X,Y,Z" in response to.
