Oh shit, Gists. I forgot about gists. There are 149 of these to go through, that's gonna take forever (and probably break some old links). Oh well. Moving off of GitHub entirely even if it kills me.#GitHub

@sam@social.coop Are you moving to a self-hosted solution, or at the very least something on your own domain?

@tyil no, absolutely not; I don't have the money or the time to waste self hosting

@sam@social.coop You're setting yourself up for having to move everything over again in the future, then 😔

@tyil I'd rather move once every 10 years than waste my time trying to do ops stuff and fixing it when it goes down, and then setting up more infrastructure to manage that, plus CI, etc. I hate computers, why would I willingly make myself do more of that, even if I did have the skills (which not all devs do)?I'd start a co-op with a few people though where that workload and the associated costs could be spread out more, if you want to start a cooperative hosting platform though.

@sam@social.coop That's fair I guess. I do think you're overcomplicating the situation you want to have, which in turn will increase costs more than needed. The Internet, much like the Fediverse built on top of it, is a better place when we have a large amount of small sites, rather than a few huge places. Smaller spaces are also cheaper and easier to host, and the impact of downtime becomes much less egregious. Downtime on its own is also not the end of the world, even though huge corporations will act as if it were. This is mostly because they care only for profit, and downtime would affect potential earnings. Remove the profit aspect, and downtime is just a fact of life. The co-op is a very good idea, and I'd love to see more of them. I don't know any local places who would be interested in them (living in a small city in the Netherlands), but I have a significant amount of hardware in my attic that I wouldn't mind sharing with other like-minded individuals nearby.
