Here is a rabit hole. And this might get me off youTube at last. I feel like I'm going mad. Like I can't trust anything. Maybe that's the point or maybe it's projection. Is something going on? Or are people reacting to a bad environment and seeing digital demons everywhere? Some of this reminds me of how audiophiles hear all kinds of things that aren't there. Could this just be "compression" ?:(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86nhP8tvbLY

@futurebird yeah, I really don't like the clickbait title on an entirely speculative claim when it could just be YouTube using more aggressive compression settings. I think the fact that people now see AI even in non-ai content is a really bad sign in how it destroys trust in entirely 'clean' content, and that's scary

@futurebird I'd seen that Beato short and thought things looked off but didn't suspect yt messing with the video.

@futurebird Looking at the detail in the images it does have a sort of hyperreal appearance in the examples, while smoothing out large tracts of the image presumably for better compression.I expect that they found that some test sample of people responded positively to the processing. It will also have the added advantage that it renders the material less desirable for training AIs as it's been messed with, while google are in the position to use the raw data to train their models.

@Nazani @raven667 @dalias We can learn to use #peertube together I guess. I also like art history videos. And I'm so tired.

@dalias @adamhotep @raven667 @Nazani Why is the "look" of the compression making people think of AI, though?

@dalias @adamhotep @raven667 @Nazani I'm interested in the technical discussion but this post was also about a "bad feeling" a corrosive feeling that comes from not knowing if what you are looking at is real or not. I think that problem there isn't so much technical as human. No one has said "YouTube would never do such a thing without telling the creators and users!" Because no one has that kind of confidence in them. And no one should.

@futurebird @raven667 @Nazani because they accomplish it by smoothing things so they compress more easily. That process probably shares a lot with generative models. Consider @dalias's point of saving money: they're not going to use much compute on this, so it looks more artificial.

@futurebird @dalias @adamhotep @raven667 @Nazani A month ago I had to deal with a moderation flag. One contributor to our project had flagged another user as using AI to answer questions in the user chat room.I still had to go through the process of detailing the complaint and talking to both sides privately. Despite knowing that the person they were complaining about was well known and was just from India so their language use was differentAI Hyper Sensitivity sure looks like a real thing

@oberstenzian Maybe! We don't really know. I want to make that clear. I haven't found, evidence beyond some concerns like those raised in this video and what I've seen myself. I cannot however say that this isn't totally possible?

@futurebird What do you mean about audiophiles hear things that aren't there? I've never heard anyone make such a claim before...

@futurebird image/video compression sounds right. Would be interesting if it's an AI compression engine.
