"Sivanandan has now been given the woman international master rank, which is the sits as the second-highest rank given to women exclusively and is just behind woman grandmaster."Why does chess need gendered titles though?? 🤨

@3TomatoesShort I think the best way to determine if such titles are helpful is to do regular surveys of women who play chess, and not just top players but all participants. If most of the women think it's not important it could be dropped, but sometimes you need to make space for growth when you have something as lopsided as chess. In 1996 I was told flat-out that my school team didn't take girls. I would have joined a women's team if there were one.

@futurebirdOh for sure, I absolutely see the need for incentives to bring girls in. I just don't personally see how gendered titles function within that need, but absolutely happy to be corrected by women and girls in the chess world, it's not a world I'm familiar with.
