Samsung: 5 year warranty for SSDs!Also Samsung: to make a warranty claim call this number... unless it's for an SSD, then contact the store you bought the SSD atHow am I supposed to remember after 5 years which store I bought the SSD at?

@wolf480pl not like they're going to honor any warranties without the proof of purchase you have obviously saved somewhere :)

@dragoonaethis my point is, compared to Dell or Lenovo, this is poor treatment

also, how do you even RMA disks?Do you ATA SECURITY ERASE before sending them?Do you just overwrite LUKS headers on the partitions that were encrypted, and then manually delete any sensitive data from the unencrypted ones? Like, by mounting a filesystem RW on a dying drive?

@nihl do I have to be careful to avoid overwriting the bad sectors?Like obviously if I overwrite the bad sectors, the drive will just remap them because now it knows what's supposed to be there so it no longer needs the original ones...

@wolf480pl I've supposedly got life time warrant on some RAM I need to replace, but I'm not looking forward to claiming that when the store I bought it from when bankrupt two years ago.

If you have ANY kind of encryption whatsoever, you're fine.If you have nothing, and the drive still basically works, cool trick: Delete the files...It'll send DISCARD messages to the SSD and then the SSD will dutifully reclaim the sectors. There might be some app to make it send TRIM/DISCARD messages for every block. IDK.

@cjd there is, but if I discard the bad sectors then they won't be able to reproduce the problem...

@cjd like, there's a high chance just sending discards for the whole drive and updating firmware would turn it into a perfectly functioning drive. But I don't want to find that out.

Ahh, so they require testing before they accept it as an RMA?

Scrap it, because testing it is too expensive to be worthwhile. I've RMAd duds from Aliexpress and they ask for a picture of it failing then they refund the money and let me keep it.
