My wife and I decided to give up #Instagram reels and I gave up #Youtube shorts. It made a huge difference in our life after just one week. To start, we have both started doing all the activities that we have been wanting to do like reading, and other hobbies. But, most important, my wife's depression has not been a struggle for her this week.I have noticed a difference in her and she even says she feels lighter. So, if you are having trouble, just cut it out.#socialmedia #depression

@my_actual_brain@fosstodon.org Everyone has known about the mental issues these kinds of media cause for over a decade. What made you stick to using proprietary software intended to rot the brain for so long?

@tyil these apps are designed to be addicting. I have pretty good self control, but my wife asked me to passcode restrict the apps on her phone. But the reason why is just addiction to them.

@my_actual_brain@fosstodon.org these apps are designed to be addictingWell yeah, but so is pretty much everything else nowadays. You're not doing cocaine or heroine on a daily basis I presume, even though these are highly addictive too.It just seems strange to me that someone on FOSStodon is addicted to proprietary software, which has been widely known to be very detrimental to mental health for a long time now. I was hoping there'd be an actual reason you'd kept using it for such a long time given that it should be in direct conflict with your moral values.

@tyil @my_actual_brain what is of relevance is that they stopped though. one cant change past actions, only the present and future.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @my_actual_brain@fosstodon.org Assuming you meant "What do you think "FOSS" is about?", I think it is about user freedom to use software as they wish.Actively seeking out harmful proprietary software seems to clash with this ideology.

@bonifartius@qoto.org @my_actual_brain@fosstodon.org That's true, but if there was an actual reason other than "I actually don't care about living up to my stated moral values" perhaps its something free software advocates can look into fixing in order to promote free software to more people.

@tyil @my_actual_brain "FOSS" is about trying to be neutral between free software and "open source", but failing to be neutral and rather completely obeying proprietary software companies ("open source").If you care about freedom, you say free software, or libre software, or something that has the same meaning.

@Suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com @my_actual_brain@fosstodon.org I agree on the naming with you. However, I also know people often use wrong terms, not everyone is a native English speaker here, so I try to look past that. Those who care about free software but call it FOSS are already doing a better job than those who don't care about free software at all.

@tyil @my_actual_brain free software doesn't lend itself to being addictive very much and most people don't care for freedom if only they get token rewards for "normal" behavior. ~80% were getting random injections - i know it's a bit of a tired example, but it is a perfect example for how people act imho - for the "reward" of being "allowed" to participate again. that's where moral values for the majority stand.

I deleted the big social networks years ago:https://battlepenguin.com/philosophy/youll-find-me-i-promise/I honestly barely used them anyway. I know there are some people I might never talk to again, but that's honestly fine. I feel like I put more effort now into my immediate friends and those efforts feel more meaningful. The big social networks are meant to divide people. They're not designed to make anyone's life better. It feels so much more personal if someone takes time out of their life to text me a cat video, rather than just broadcasting it to the world.
