Sitting in a noisy cafe trying to be productive. Regretting that I didn't bring my noise-cancelling earbuds. Sigh. Next time will remember. Luckily this doesn't happen often.

@lightweight In a similar "I thought I set up to be productive" space here. Sigh, gotta do what I can.

Could be confirmation bias, but I keep hearing people saying 'AI' all around me. It feels like people's minds have been colonised by bigtech's propaganda. It's quite alarming, actually.

At the table next to mine, a trio are talking about how they're going to integrate 'AI' into their organisational portal. These people do not inspire *any* confidence in their understanding or competence.

In another cafe now (work on car is taking longer than expected)... this one's relatively quiet. But the music vibe (alt country!?) is offputting. The chorus of the last song is 'Thank god' this and that - a weird Christian musical abomination. Maybe that's how the proprietors of this cafe roll. Doesn't seem to be helping their business given the lack of customers. Lots of sources of 'WTF' and general terror today.

@lightweight I can remember in late 90s in my old hometown (Reading in SE England, a bit like "British Seattle") how you could sit on the bus and you'd hear folk talking about .com / Internet / Windows and setting up computer networks (with many misconceptions and factual errors), this has been going on for a while and has helped cement the domination of big tech...

Turns out the music is the barista's choice (a young woman) - given that, besides me and the occasional takeaway customer, she's alone in here... fair enough.

@lightweight Yeah, I prefer my Christian music to be old-fashioned, even if it's something newly written like something by Rutter.

@stevefoerster heh. I prefer my Christian music to be ironic and highlighting of unbounded hypocrisy.

Sadly, the prognosis on the vehicle whose fate was being decided while I was attempting to work in various cafes is not auspicious. Looks like it's not worth doing much of anything to fix it given its state & max potential value. My boy, a learner driver, loves the car, as it's a 4WD wagon with a manual transmission. But it's got some rust and other expensive issues that likely to make it unwarrantable... Guess we'll find out on Weds when it goes in for a(n attempted) warrant. π€

For what it's worth (not much, I accept), I've owned the car for the past 28 years, and it's 33 years old. It doesn't owe me much, but its engine's probably still got an easy 150k kilometers in it. It's just the rest of the car that's disintegrating around it a bit.

@lightweight So easy for people to think that you βjustβ add it in. In my opinion AI is the biggest and most relentless threat to my principles as a developer that Iβve ever seen. Jesus in the desert something something.

@lightweight That is a nice healthy life for a car! What is the warrant thing here? Does someone legally have to decide it is roadworthy or something?

@ocdtrekkie it's NZ"s process for 'inspecting' a car and deeming it road-worthy (or not)... There's a lot to be said for having an old car that's suitable for all the messy jobs.

@lightweight Wow, that's quite comprehensive. Here we do have to do emissions testing (which for most cars involves plugging into the diagnostics port, and nothing more), but certainly nothing that comprehensively checks that... the entire car is in good condition.

@lightweight Are there any DIY panel-beating (night) classes still about?A welder, an angle grinder, and a spray gun and off you, or the lad, go, for a little while.

@zl2tod yes, there're plans afoot for taking matters into our own hands (the analogue automotive analogue of the digital self-hosting I'm always banging on about π )... I mean, I did put all that effort into the mechanical engineering masters... maybe should put it to some use, eh. How hard can it be?! (π)
