A publication I respect greatly just switched platforms, from Ghost to the odious Substack. I canceled my (paid) subscription and explained why. The founder replied that network effects were what mattered. Bad actors accrete power when good people rationalize the consequences of their choices.

@dangillmor yeah. It’s also what matters to the Nazis they platform. And their presence there gets them the Nazi network, and gets the Nazi network their audience. It’s a “virtuous” cycle. Of shit.

@dangillmor When did the technology platform become a political decision over a technology / features decision? Ghost, Substack, Wordpress, aren’t they all blogging platforms with different feature sets? As a reader, I shouldn’t have to think about the tech platform, just the content, right?

@dwev @dangillmor the key feature today is whether they push stuff at us. if they do and they get to choose (usually the algo), who the platform owner is really matters. they have power over what your subscribers see. and if they get big enough, they have cultural power. civic influence.this is what separates SS from ghost and wordpress atm. the former has recommendations and is building a closed social network. the latter are embracing fedi where we choose. #SocialWeb #DemocracyOfReach

@wjmaggos @dangillmor ah okay that makes sense. I have only read a couple of articles on SS, never really looked into it as a platform, so the fact it has a “echo chamber” recommendation system, and it platforms extremists, means it’s making a statement to deliberately host there. Thanks for the insight.

@dwev @dangillmor all these big closed places have the real advantage of enabling creators to reach a big audience. we can do everything else better (at least eventually).I don't think we win by saying "but they're bad" cause everyone differs on how bad they think they are. and the internet is full of bad shit. I think we need a more universal message and something we can build a movement upon. that here unlike everywhere else, we're fully in control. that matters for culture and civics.
