Starting to think everyone should have to use public defenders. And cases should be done with pseudonyms and transcripts where possible. The jury could read the account from the prosecutor and defendant and submit more written questions. Everyone gets randomly selected representation. (Probably unworkable but did you know some people will pick a lawyer because they know the prosecutor socially? You can pay more for that.)

This is not a good time or place for my personal tolerance for "this is just how the world works" BS to suddenly fall to absolute zero but here we are.

@futurebird Yes, this has always puzzled me about the legal system. If more expensive lawyers are no more likely to win trials, then why would the powerful pay extra for better lawyers? If they are more likely to win, then that's a clear admission that the legal system is broken. It's odd how we pretend otherwise.

@futurebird that actually does sound like a good, if somewhat utopian idea.I just think that it would get corrupted quickly anyway, but the system is corrupted now so...

@futurebird I'm right there with you. I have no tolerance for fascists or neoliberals gaslighting me in even the smallest of ways.

@futurebirdI like to do the same thing with elections. The voter gets no names, no identifiers (not even political party) and you vote solely based on their platform and stance on the issues.

@DavidM_yeg @queenofnewyork I remember a study that showed that people tend to overestimate their ability to detect lies. In my personal experience people who say they are good at spotting lies can sometimes be some of the worst. (They are very certain that someone is truthful or not... which can kind of shut your ears off.)

@futurebird @DavidM_yeg @queenofnewyork My approach is to not look for lies, that's hard. It is MUCH easier to see if a person is kind or not, I have had a stunning success rate

@futurebird Yea, I think you've got the right of it for this one. The push back will be hard (especially from people like the US DOJ, who take every advantage of the system as it is to stomp on the less-than-wealthy), but it is a fight worth having.

@futurebird Need some slogan/battle cry like: “Horrifying mediocrity may be be the pinnacle of your achievement, but it is not good enough!”"Change. Fix. Repair.”
